Not every game can have fast pacing action like Doom or have a complicated learning curve like Elden Ring. Sometimes all you want is to sit down, wrap yourself in a cozy blanket and spend hours playing wholesome games like Unpacking or Stardew Valley.

If you're in the mood for something like that, don't miss out on Little Rock Games' latest title, "To The Rescue!" an incredibly charming game where you'll be in charge of a dog shelter. However, just because the game is all cutesy-like, that doesn't mean you'll know everything right away. To ensure you'll get through To The Rescue! main storyline, here are a few beginner tips you definitely should follow.

Use The Ribbons Tool To Get Dogs Back To Their Kennels

using the ribbons

After talking with a potential adopter and asking them what type of dog they're looking for, you'll have to select up to five dogs from the shelter and place them in the show kennels, so the adopter can see them and decide if they want to adopt any of dogs you picked for them.

There are two ways you can take the dogs to the exhibitions kennels. Either go to the dog's kennel, take them out and then walk them to an exhibition kennel (you'll have to repeat this process with every dog you want to show), or grab the Rosette Badge Tool that's next to the exhibition kennels and, with the tool selected, go to the kennel where the dog you want to show is.

Doing so will teleport the dog from their kennel into the exhibition one, which means you won't have to walk back and forth between both areas every time you want to bring in a new dog. Moreover, once the adopter has decided which dog they want to take home, you can use the badge to automatically place the dogs back into their original kennels, saving you the trouble of remembering where each dog was.

When Placing Dogs In A New Kennel, Make Sure It Has The Correct Food-Type

feeding the dogs

One of the first things you will learn in this game is that dogs are messy, and they poop a lot, so as the dog shelter manager, you'll have to make sure every space is poop-free. This situation will only get worse if you feed the dog the incorrect food type, as they'll poop more and get dirty faster.

To avoid this, always check a dog's preferred food in the dog's folder before feeding them, and make sure the kennel you're moving a dog into has their preferred food choice pre-selected.

You can change the pre-selected food type in a kennel by pouring a new type into the food bowl.

Make Sure You Feed And Water Your Dogs, Even When They Don't Need Itthirsty dog

Dogs need to drink water and eat to survive like all living creatures. So that will be one of your many tasks in the shelter, making sure the animals are properly fed and have enough water.

When a dog is hungry or thirsty, you'll see a food or water thought bubble coming from their heads and a text on the right of your screen, which informs you how many dogs need to be fed or need water. Seeing as the dogs' bowls empty over time, you should refill them every morning if possible, even if the dog is not marked as hungry or thirsty. Doing so will save you a lot of time later in the day when you have to deal with potential adopters or dirty dogs.

Doing Overtime Is A Two-Bladed Strategy

shelter's finances

There's only so much you can do during working hours, and at the end of each day, you have to manually clock out to get to the next day. However, after the shelter closes, you have the option to stay a little longer to finish any pending task.

Doing so seems incredibly useful as you'll have a lot of time to get things back on track if you're significantly behind on the shelter's upkeep. However, doing extra hours comes with a cost, literally. You'll be losing 50 dollars every additional hour, and if you're not quick enough, that will translate to red numbers on your daily balance.

Seeing as you'll get a game over if you end up with too much debt, losing money is not a great idea.

When You Have Multiple Dirty Dogs, Leash As Much As You Can

giving multiple dogs a bath

One of the most time-consuming tasks in this game is giving the dogs a bath. Especially when you have lots of dirty dogs in one shelter. Beware, don't neglect bathing the dogs as the number will only increase with time, and you can end up with more than ten dogs that need your attention.

To make this task a little easier, leash as many dogs as you can and take all of them into the bath area. You can place one leashed dog into the shower, clean it, leash it again, and then move on to the next dog you have on the leash.

This will save you a lot of time since you won't need to move back and forth between the kennels and the bath area. Just make sure you remember each dog's original kennel, or you can end up placing them inside a kennel that doesn't have their preferred food.

Upgrade Your Character As Soon As You Can

to the rescue upgrade shop

When you start this game, you will only be able to simultaneously leash up to two dogs and carry two tools at a time. However, you can increase this by upgrading your character in the shop; you should do that as soon as possible as being able to carry more tools or leash more dogs will save you a lot of time. Plus, it'll prevent constant travel between one area of the shelter to the other.

You Have To Come Up With An Strategy When Showing The Dogs

dogs in show kennels

Every potential adopter has a meter you have to fill to convince them to adopt one of the dogs you're showing. Each dog has several stars as part of their adoptability; things like how old they are or how clean they are, change the number of stars each dog has. The more stars, the more sections of the adopter's meter that dog will fill.

Whenever a potential adopter is looking for a specific characteristic - for example, that the dog is a particular breed or has a specific personality trait -, show them a dog that meets their needs as it'll give the animal one extra star per trait. So, when a potential adopter has a specific request, and you only have like two or three dogs that meet their needs, the other dogs you have to show need to be dogs with a high number of stars. Doing so will increase the chances of them adopting a dog.

Don't Be Afraid To Start Over

starting a new game in to the rescue

Hey, getting the hang out of things in this game has a bit of a learning curve, so if at any point during the main storyline you feel stuck and that you're running out of time, don't hesitate to start the game from day one again. It'll let you put the things you learned into action, allowing you to get further this time.
