Todd McFarlane mostly wanted Spawn to impress Mortal Kombat fans—not just Spawn fans—with his Mortal Kombat 11 debut.

Spawn was first announced as a DLC character for Mortal Kombat 11 way back when the first Kombat Pack trailer dropped last May. Along with Shang Tsung, Sindel, Nightwolf, and two mystery characters (which are rumored to be the Terminator and Ash from Evil Dead) was the demon Hellspawn himself.

For the longest time, that was largely the size of it. NetherRealm Studios has yet to release any information other than Spawn’s name, so we don’t know what he looks like, his abilities, or anything else for that matter.

However, there is one man who does know, and that’s Spawn’s creator: Todd McFarlane. In an interview with IGN at the San Diego Comic-Con last weekend, McFarlane revealed how he was approached by NetherRealm to include Spawn as a DLC character in Mortal Kombat 11.

"You can do it, but I only have really one condition: this thing needs to be cool from a Mortal Kombat fan's point of view—not a Spawn [fan's] point of view," McFarlane said. "You will have done your job and I will be proud of you if somebody downloads this character at some point, doesn't even know who it is, [and says] ‘he's my favorite character to play’.”

McFarlane stressed, first and foremost, that he wanted Mortal Kombat's Spawn to appeal to Mortal Kombat fans, but he also expressed that Spawn fans would also be happy with the end results. McFarlane was consulted during Spawn's creation, including early design, dialog, and his special abilities. You can check out McFarlane's interview with IGN below.

Apparently, there are quite a few Spawn fans over at NetherRealm, as they would often reference specific issues of the comic when creating Spawn's abilities and costumes.

"He's gonna do a lot of cool stuff," McFarlane added. "There's gonna be a lot more red than just his cape."

There is still uncertainty regarding the date of Spawn's arrival. Hopefully, his addition on the roster won’t be too long after Nightwolf and Sindel.
