The alleged attacker is said to be a man in his 20s wearing a green shirt and purple suit, resembling Heath Ledger’s version of the Joker. The attack happened today, with many Tokyo citizens dressed up for Halloween.

As reported by The Guardian, a line operator said that services were suspended after “an incident involving injuries” took place just before 8pm local time in the western suburbs of Kokuryo.

Japanese media station NHK has published a video taken by a passenger which shows several people running through a smoke-filled carriage that has been set on fire. A video was also posted on Twitter showing passengers escaping the train carriages through open windows.

NHK also published interviews with some of the passengers aboard the train during the incident. A male passenger said, “First I thought it was something like a Halloween event. But I rushed away as a man carrying a long knife came in. I was very fortunate not to be injured”.

A female passenger was also interviewed saying, “He held a knife and started spreading liquid. He was committing this act without showing any emotion, just mechanically. I think that brought fear to everyone.”
