Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore Is The #1 eShop Game In Japan

Though the original Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE was overlooked by many, its successor, Encore, has now become the top selling eShop game in Japan.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is receiving a new lease of life Japan, as the game has topped the eShop charts for the week of its release.

The original version of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE for the Nintendo Wii U was cruelly overlooked during its time. The game sold poorly, due to the small install base of the system and the already niche subject matter of an Atlus RPG following magical wannabe idols. The positive critical reception to Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE didn't bring in the crowds and the game seemed doomed to be forgotten. Nintendo revealed during the September 2019 Direct that an updated remaster of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (called Encore) would be coming to the Switch in 2020 with new content.

It was initially reported (via Persona Central) that Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore had worse physical sales in Japan than the Wii U version of the game, but it seems that the game is doing far better digitally. Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is currently the number one ranked game on the Nintendo eShop in terms of sales in Japan, as demonstrated below by Twitter user CrocOclock.

There were concerns that the recent censorship controversy surrounding Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore would influence the game's chances in Japan. Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE for the Wii U was heavily censored in the west and it was this version of the game that formed the basis for Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore. This caused issues in Japan, when official promotional material for the game included clips from the uncensored version of the game, leading to Nintendo offering refunds for preorders. It seems that the controversy has done little to deter the enthusiasm for the game in Japan, at least on the eShop.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore is a phenomenal game that deserves a second chance at life. Persona 5 helped the Atlus style of RPG achieve mainstream status in the west and it remains to be seen whether Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore can piggyback on the success of the Phantom Thieves and find its own audience.
