There's been a new development on Torchlight Frontiers. In development for what seems like eons, publisher Perfect World Entertainment has confirmed that the title isn't canceled is actually on track for a summer 2020 release. In addition to that, Frontiers will now be going by the title of Torchlight III, solidifying its status as a true sequel to the previous entries.

Originally announced as a free-to-play title, Torchlight III will be going back to the traditional premium model of its predecessors. Along with now costing money, the game will take the form of a regular action RPG with a progression system similar to other games in this genre.

Developer Echtra Games' CEO Max Schaefer said, "When we started developing Torchlight Frontiers, we were focused on creating a shared-world experience. During development, you often discover what type of product a game was meant to be and we found Torchlight Frontiers was meant to be a true successor to Torchlight I and II. Based on this and extensive feedback from our Alpha testers, we decided it was time to take the game back to its roots and model it after the classic Torchlight games that action RPG fans have come to love."

The game will initially be coming to PC with a console release "shortly after." Closed alpha testing will start in just a few days on January 29, 2020. "We'd like to thank our dedicated player base for supporting us and providing such insightful feedback during early development," Schaefer added.

A blog over on the game's official website lays out a ton of changes that will be coming to III. Progression is the biggest difference, but even things like the way zones are laid out feels more reminiscent of past Torchlight games. This will likely be great news to fans of the original, especially since Blizzard is years off from releasing Diablo IV.

I can't say I personally cared about Frontiers before, but this change in development gives me more hope for the future. With the game releasing later in the year, it will be curious to see if its console ports end up being on PS5 and Xbox.
