It's not easy being a foot soldier in the world of Total War: Warhammer 2. No matter how formidable you think you are, there will always be a dragon, shaggoth, or some death metal warriors ready to squash you. Suffice to say, there are overpowered units in the factions of Total War: Warhammer 2, and they're likely to be favorite units in their respective factions.

They either make the faction shine better or make the whole Mortal Empires campaign a joke, especially if you cram 19 of them in an army and start steamrolling all over the map. Even the A.I. does this sometimes! So, in order to even out the playing field, check out these borderline busted non-Lord units in the game. They may not be as godly as a Faction Lord wielding the Sword of Khaine but they make for pretty good alternatives.

Updated August 8, 2021 by Sid Natividad: There are so many good units in Total War: Warhammer 2 that it would be hard to include everyone's favorite. That notion is only compounded by the fact that there are so many factions vying for supremacy in this Warhammer title. Well, the same can be said for any Warhammer title, to be honest.

Now once you've picked your favorite faction, knowing which Warhammer 2 units work best in an army composition is key to reigning supreme both in the battle and campaign map. Hence, we've chosen to expand this roster in order to incorporate some of the less META races. They too have their own aces in the form of Total War: Warhammer 2 units.

15 Sisters Of Slaughter (Dark Elves)

sisters-of-slaughter tww2
  • Unit type: Infantry
  • Attack: 37
  • Defense: 59

As unconventional as they are in the macabre battlefields of Warhammer Fantasy, the Sisters of Slaughter can give even the toughest elite units in the game a run for their gold. They do poison damage and have good speed, making them perfect for dealing with heavily armored units.

Even Chaos Chosen sometimes have problems dealing with these girls. Both the community and the in-game AI know this fact. Some of them even build up specialized doom stacks of 19 Sisters of Slaughter cohorts.

14 Necrofex Colossus (Vampire Coast)

necrofex colossus tww2
  • Unit type: Monster
  • Attack: 42
  • Defense: 30

Don't be fooled by the rather low defense; these things are walking armies in their own right. The Necrofex Colossi are some of the most powerful units in the Vampire Coast recruitment. To put it simply, these are ship carcasses complete with their own crew who are all cursed to become sentient walking scourges.

Sure enough, they strike fear into the hearts of any enemy army. More than that, they can also double as siege equipment since they have long-range cannons. Some of these hulking undead cruise ships can even take out whole infantry cohorts before they even get close. That automatically makes them doom stack-material.

13 Ancient Stegadon (Lizardmen)

ancient stegadon tww2
  • Unit type: Monster
  • Attack: 30
  • Defense: 32

What the Stegadon lacks in big damage stats on paper, it makes up for with impressive mass. It's one of the biggest and nastiest monsters in Total War: Warhammer 2. Well, that's a given since it's a dinosaur and an angry one at that.

The Stegadon also has the option to get some mounts that can pelt the enemy ranks with attrition damage and many other debilitations. Other than that, it's a tanky unit that you can send to the enemy frontlines without much worry.

12 War Hydra (Dark Elves)

war hydra tww2
  • Unit type: Monster
  • Attack: 52
  • Defense: 26

Looking for a unit you can take into campaigns without much need for replenishment or other high-maintenance army stuff? Get a War Hydra then. These Dark Elven elite monsters pack quite a punch. Several heads mean the biting power is exponentially increased.

The Hydra's low defense is easily offset by its monstrous regeneration rate which rivals that of Vampire Counts units when being magically healed. As such, the War Hydra is tough to beat in prolonged fights or protracted campaign map assaults.

11 Ironbreakers (Dwarfs)

  • Unit type: Infantry
  • Attack: 30
  • Defense: 68

Then again, you might prefer something that will neither retreat nor break in the face of overwhelming adversity. That's when you employ the Ironbreakers. These stout and sturdy bearded men of the mountains have one of the most durable armor in the game.

They can defend themselves and hold a line without faltering, even against monster units. You can also bet that they won't ever rout or retreat since they also have one of the highest morale points in the game, making them somewhat on par with soulless Chaos units.

10 Star Dragons (High Elves)

star-dragon-tww2
  • Unit type: Monster
  • Attack: 64
  • Defense: 50

High Elves get the proudest and shiniest units in the game as well as the best dragons, namely the Star Dragons. They're absolutely insane and including even at least one in your army can boost up the auto-resolve rate.

When micromanaged, particularly with their breath attacks, they can wipe out whole units effortlessly. Charge-cycling them is also easy as they're some of the beefiest units in the game. The beauty in them is that you don't even have to be careful with these elite units as High Elven healers can ensure that these dragons never die, due to the single-unit-focus of the healing.

9 Dragon Ogre Shaggoth (Chaos)

  • Unit type: Monster
  • Attack: 52
  • Defense: 50

Then again, there might be an actual creature capable of turning the Star Dragon into a lizard kebab. That would be the Dragon Ogre Shaggoth — the most awe-inducing unit in the Chaos roster. Against any large unit, they can come out unscathed after a duel.

Against infantry and regular units, they'll probably go through them like a bowling ball against bowling pins. They're unstoppable, easy to maneuver, and deal tons of damage. Put 19 of them in Suneater Kholek's Shaggoth bachelor party and watch them trash everything.

8 Chosen (Great Weapons)

chosen-tww2
  • Unit type: Infantry
  • Attack: 48
  • Defense: 46

As for hands-down the best and most aesthetically fearsome units in the game, give it up for Khorne's favorites, the Chosen. Which among them? Apparently, the Great Weapon variant is the heaviest hitter among them.

Sic them against any infantry unit, and they'll melt through them like butter. Few elite infantry units can stand up against the Chosen, even if they're outnumbered five-to-one. The best part is that they don't flee and will try to take whoever defeated them to the grave.

7 Skin Wolves (Norsca)

skin-wolves-tww2
  • Unit type: Monster infantry
  • Attack: 50
  • Defense: 38

Norsca has some pretty impressive units overall but their shock troopers, namely the Skin Wolves, contribute the best to any army composition. The un-armored variants are fast and can deal with almost any unit type.

They're the perfect units for flanking or chasing down slower infantry units and ripping them to shreds before they can enact their purpose. Unlike other units, though, t's not recommended to put them in bulk, as they can be countered due to the low armor. However, that's what the armored variants are for.

6 Khemrian Warsphinx (Tomb Kings)

khemrian-warsphinx
  • Unit type: Monster
  • Attack: 34
  • Defense: 42

Like the Norsca, the Tomb Kings are filled with exceptional monsters or large creatures, and it's hard to pick one that excels better than others. Over the course of Warhammer 2's updates, the Warsphinx takes the cake for being a certified infantry line wrecker.

Let these gigantic dead creatures loose against the enemy frontlines and watch it collapse even if they have pike or halberd infantry. To top off all that, they also cause terror. It's a quick way to deal with any infantry-based enemy army.

5 Chameleon Skinks (Lizardmen)

chameleon-skinks-tww2
  • Unit type: Infantry
  • Attack: 20
  • Defense: 24

Shocking, right? All those big hulking lizard chads and their best units turned out to be the small and subtle ones. Well, it can't be helped, Chameleon Skinks, when they're not pestering enemy lines with their invisibility and ambush value, they're annoying the hell out of them with attrition damage.

They're one of the few units in the game that can fire projectiles at their targets while moving. Once you've set them up for an initial ambush and blow to the enemy morale, anything that chases them is bound to disappear gradually or eventually rout.

4 Irondrakes (Trollhammer Torpedo - Dwarfs)

irondrakes-tww2
  • Unit type: Infantry
  • Attack: 20
  • Defense: 27

Missile units are often easy prey for other unit types since they lack proper defenses. That's why the Dwarves and their outliers, the Irondrakes are quite the puzzle to tackle. They're heavily armored ranged units whose firepower matches artillery units.

If you don't believe in their capability, simply pit them against some Stegodons and watch them rip those behemoths apart in a couple of volleys or so. Their only weakness is getting trampled by mounted units, but they don't die that easy anyway due to their tough hides.

3 Demigryph Knights (Lances - Empire)

demigryph-knights
  • Unit type: Monster Cavalry
  • Attack: 38
  • Defense: 36

The Empire also has tons of beautiful options, especially for their cavalry or non-infantry units. But, the best among those would be the Demigryph Knights. If we had to pick one among the variants, the Lances are at the top.

RELATED: Warhammer 40,000: Primarchs Most Likely To Be Added To The Game

They're the most valuable mounted units in The Empire and this monstrous cavalry is a great all-around unit. They're heavily armored, they have shields, they can come out victorious in mosh pits, and they're also fast. The Lance variant also does well against large units.

2 Black Orcs (Greenskins)

black-orcs-tww2
  • Unit type: Infantry
  • Attack: 36
  • Defense: 26

Black Orcs are the most formidable among the Greenskins, and they have some of the meanest stats in the game. Depending on the Lord buffs and conditions, they can even go toe-to-toe with Chaos Chosen.

At first glance, other elite units might look slightly more appealing but once WAAAGH! kicks in, dealing with the Black Orcs is a nigh-impossible feat. They'll chew through everything in front of them and then move on to their next victims.

1 Waywatchers (Wood Elves)

waywatchers-tww2-1
  • Unit type: Infantry
  • Attack: 28
  • Defense: 32

Apparently, the Waywatchers have been nerfed multiple times, but they still come out on top of the Wood Elf roster. When it comes to Armour-Piercing damage, they're like the best out of all infantry units in the game.

The best part is that they do it in range and can also stalk and have great mobility. Their arrows go through everything. The only catch is that you have to keep these glass cannons alive in order for them to be useful. That shouldn't too hard, seeing as they have the highest range out of all missile infantry in the game.
