Trials of Mana is going to be remade into a modern 3D action RPG for PC as well as PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch.

The first Trials of Mana was released on the SNES way back in 1995. Known as Seiken Densetsu 3 in Japan, it was the third entry into the Mana series and was the sequel to the wildly popular Secret of Mana. Strangely, the first game was called Final Fantasy Adventure in an attempt to play off the popularity of the Final Fantasy series in North America (in much the same way as Final Fantasy Tactics or Crystal Chronicles did).

Trails of Mana had pretty typical gameplay for the era. Presented as a top-down action game in much the same way as Legend of Zelda, added character stats like health and magic points gave the game an RPG feel in what might be one of the first action RPGs of all time. It also allowed 2-player co-op, which was a pretty new thing for an RPG.

The classic games were released as a three-pack on the Nintendo Switch just last week at E3 (for the low price of $39.99, by the way), but now it looks like Square Enix has another surprise in store for us: a complete remake of Trials of Mana.

It’s not quite the same as Final Fantasy VII Remake, but we’ll take it!

Simply called Trials of Mana, the remake will feature a brand new combat system, revamped skills and leveling, and a fully 3D environment and models with modern graphics. Consider the first game a template where the remake will apply it to a more modern action-RPG like Kingdom Hearts.

The first trailer looks pretty good, and Trials of Mana looks like it’d be right at home on the Switch. However, Square isn’t just limiting this remake to Nintendo’s mobile console; Trials of Mana will also head to the PlayStation 4 and Windows PC via Steam as well.

Trials of Mana releases sometime in early 2020.
