Square Enix had a bunch of game announcements for today's Nintendo Direct, but since Triangle Strategy already released on the Switch back in March, the Direct didn't mention the game's coming Steam release. Since we're platform-agnostic here at The Gamer, we'll take over that duty for them.

Triangle Strategy is coming to PC via Steam on October 13. Pre-orders for the tactical RPG will be available shortly and ordering before the release date will get you 10 percent off the final price, whatever that turns out to be.

For fans of Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre, Triangle Strategy will have a very familiar format. You play as a team of characters looking to resolve a conflict between three warring nations: Glenbrook, Aesfrost, and Hyzante. Each is fighting over scarce resources such as iron and salt, and each bare old grudges from a war fought 30 years ago.

Combat is fought on a grid where positioning matters. Attack from above or behind for increased damage, or surround opponents to attack at the same time. Each character has its own set of unique attributes, including special attacks which consume regenerating Tactical Points. Level up characters to increase their attributes, gain new skills, and make them more effective in combat.

In our review back in March, Jade gave Triangle Strategy four out of five stars, calling it a mature tactical RPG that fans of the genre will love.

"Taking clear inspiration from the likes of Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics, Triangle Strategy is an achingly faithful homage to classic genre conventions that can often feel too retro for its own good," wrote Jade. "However, this faithfulness is complemented by myriad innovation and creative mechanics that help it shine. Combine that with excellent characters and an unexpectedly poignant narrative and you’ve got one of 2022’s biggest surprises."

Triangle Strategy will be available in both Standard and Deluxe Editions that will be bundled with Various Daylife, which was just released today on both Switch and Steam. Expect both editions to be available to pre-order soon. Triangle Strategy hits Steam on October 13.
