It’s a busy time being the Einherjar. You have to protect Midgard against giants and dark creatures while facing the impending doom of Ragnarok. You can play Tribes of Midgard the way you like, but Saga mode will always end up in Fimbulwinter by Day 15.

Fimbulwinter, in Norse mythology, is a sign of the coming of Ragnarok that manifests as an endless winter season for three years. You can unlock numerous rewards for getting as far past Day 15 as possible, including the Warden class. Here are some tips to help you survive at least until Day 20 and get your compensation in Valhalla.

10 Upgrade All The Gates

Three gates surround your village and serve as initial protection against the siege of Helthings and Jotnar that descend almost nightly. By the time Fimbulwinter arrives, you’ll need beefy gates that can stand a beating because continuous waves of enemies will come relentlessly.

Each gate can be upgraded up to Level Three using souls, cut stone, wooden boards, and wrought iron. Make sure your gates are fully upgraded when the endless winter comes. This will significantly lessen the number of times you need to rebuild them, as there is no repair mechanic for gates.

9 Constantly Give Souls To The Seed Of Yggdrasil

The Seed Of Yggdrasil, the latest in a long line of magnificent trees in gaming, is the heart of your village. It must be protected from opposing forces of Ragnarok and will require you to donate souls for its sustenance. In return, you get waves of healing.

When the endless winter comes, you can expect the gate to inevitably crumble now and then despite your best efforts. Don’t lose hope and head for the Bifrost just yet. You can still keep the Seed of Yggdrasil alive if you constantly pour souls into it, and if you can maintain its total of 10,000 souls, that’s even better.

Even as enemies start draining souls, all is not lost as long as you don’t hit zero. You still have a chance if you’re above 4,000. Simply pour more souls, defeat the closest enemies, and rebuild the gates to prevent more from invading the inner area of the village. Since you will constantly be vanquishing foes, you will always gain enough souls to replenish the tree.

8 Get Fenrir’s Rune (And A Few Others)

Throughout the game, you can pick up runes that will give you a variety of buffs. One of the most helpful ones you can get is the Fenrir Rune. It is a legendary rune that disables durability, meaning your equipment will no longer break with use. This massive boon removes the need to repair your weapons and gear as you face off virtually infinite enemies.

You get the Fenrir Rune after defeating Fenrir, so it’s best to get that done as soon as you can. Other runes that will be of particular use to you are Nott For Speed, which increases your movement speed during the night, Keeper Of Souls, which lets you keep a portion of your souls upon death, and Soul Powered, which increases your damage output based on the number of souls you have.

7 Get Powerful Ice-Proof Clothes

It’s the endless winter, so, naturally, it’s going to be extremely cold. Weather effects will cut down your health quickly if you don’t have the right protective resources. As much as you can keep making potions to resist the cold, you’ll have a much easier time if you craft armor sets that already provide resistance against freezing. At this point in the game, you’ll also want gear that is no less than epic (or Level Four) to survive.

6 Craft At Least Epic-Tier Weapons In Different Elements

Surviving is not just about defense, as you’ll need to have powerful weapons to conquer Helthings, Jotnar, and Ancients. By the time the endless winter comes around, you should have at least Level Four or Epic weapons. As enemies get tougher, you’ll want to increase your damage output.

And while you may have a preference for a certain element, it’s best to mix it up as different types of Jotnar come around. Considering they will have hundreds of thousands of hit points, you should have some backup weapons that are a different element than your main build. Stronger weapons may also have more special skills, including healing.

5 Get All The Worksites Running By Day Ten

Delaying Ragnarok requires plenty of resources, and you’ll spend your early days running around and harvesting a lot. Make sure that, while you also upgrade your items and village, you also prioritize building the quarry, farm, and lumberyard.

Even if they’re not fully upgraded, they are extremely valuable sources that keep you stocked and ready to take on Fimbulwinter. Once they’re up and running, you just have to worry about getting special resources like the night-specific evening rowan drops, starlit seaweed, midnight yew essence, and mushroom moon bolts.

4 Seek Out Those Jotnar

A Jotun descends upon Midgard every now and then to make your life harder. You have about a day and a half between Jotnar every time you defeat one, so you don’t actually have to rush out to meet them in the earlier days of the game. It’s good to defeat them while they’re not yet overpowered, though, as it’s a solid way to get golden horns.

When it’s Fimbulwinter, the Jotnar become significantly mightier. You don’t want them to get close to the village at this stage. Send out parties to stop them in their tracks as soon as possible.

3 Assign Gate Duty Shifts

If you’re trying to get far into the apocalyptic winter before bouncing, it’s best to tackle Saga mode with other players. At least four players in your party will give you the best chance, especially as this provides more defensive power assigned to each gate. That said, you don’t necessarily want every single player in the village the whole time.

Because there are waves of enemies coming at your group, you’ll likely feel fatigued by the time you hit Day 16. If you’re still itching to unlock the Warden class or squeeze out more golden horns, then you have to split gate duty into shifts. While one group focuses on enemy defense, another group handles repairs, makes potions, adds souls to the tree, and finishes any remaining tasks or quests. You’ll also want to have a separate group in charge of taking down any invading Jotun while the home team protects the tree.

2 Stock Up On Potions, Traps, And Bombs

Before Day 15, you can happily go about Midgard without much need for traps and bombs. When violent soul-hungry enemies surround you, though, you’ll want to bust them out. They’re great at cutting down groups of enemies, staggering stronger foes, and standing as an extra line of defense when things get hairy.

You should also craft a ton of potions. Since your inventory space is limited, you should store most of these in the shared war chest for easy retrieval. Potions are your best friend when you need more health fast, you have to fight off the winter itself, or you need a movement speed boost.

1 Max Out Your Archers

Each gate can have up to two archer towers manning its sides, and you’ll want to fully upgrade every tower as much as you can. If you are finding this difficult with everything else you need materials for, you should at least have every tower up and running with one maxed-out archer for every gate.

After all, even an “army of one” such as yourself can’t be in multiple places at once. Leave extra arrows that you don’t use with the archers, and you will set enemies ablaze in the final winter. Valhalla awaits!
