In its third season, Tribes Of Midgard brought on the Inferno Saga. Naturally, this comes with the untimely arrival of Surtr to make the road to Ragnarok even more challenging. As one of the decorated warriors from Valhalla, it’s naturally your duty to face off this grand and vicious Ancient.

Because Surtr is meant to play a huge role in bringing about Ragnarok, he technically counts as your “final boss” before the endless winter forces you to run back to the Bifrost. With such a hefty role, he’s obviously going to bring the – ahem – heat. Make sure you prepare yourself as best you can to bring down the fiery giant.

10 Bring Weapons With Healing Abilities

Surtr attacks in a lot of ways, very swiftly, and with a lot of damage. To say he’s a big boy is an understatement that can cost your party a lot of souls. Although you can dodge his attacks, it’s not unheard of to go through your restorative potions just like that.

Should you be on the brink of death with no waystone ready to teleport you away, you’ll want to have another source for healing. Hence, it's best to bring weapons that have special skills like the Tree of Life or Bright Cry, which heal anyone in the radius.

You’ll find these special skills most often in stronger Lightning weapons.

9 Party Up

It’s absolutely possible to solo Surtr with the right tactics and some time, but there’s no shame in bringing a solid party along to make the job easier. While enemy power does scale based on the number of players in the world, their movements and tactics remain the same.

Even Ancients can be finished off in a much swifter fashion when there is more than one einherjar present. The best party is one that has a Seer, since they have a large selection of support and healing abilities. They can drop healing seedlings in battle, lessen temperature effects for allies in their radius, and revive incapacitated players more quickly.

8 Defeat Fenrir Before Facing Surtr

Although you can take on the Ancients in any order, we recommend going after Fenrir before you head to the Volcanic Spire. This is because Fenrir drops a unique rune when he is defeated. When equipped, it nullifies any equipment durability loss, meaning your weapons and gear will no longer break.

Because Surtr is a hardy enemy that will take more than a few swings and arrows, having indestructible weapons will give you a huge advantage. Not only will this save your resources, but it also means you don’t have to break up the party or travel back and forth just to repair your stuff.

7 Wear Fireproof Gear

It goes without saying that Surtr, guardian of Muspelheim and fire demon, will be lobbing endless fire at you in a variety of ways. You can bring fireproof potions if you want, but the more efficient way to go about it is to wear fireproof gear. This way, you can save your inventory slots for speed boosters, bombs, and health potions.

You’ll likely go up against Surtr in the late stages of your run, so you should have been able to farm enough items to make the necessary gear. There’s a variety of powerful armor in Midgard, but you’ll want ones that specifically protect you against the heat. You won’t be completely immune to damage, but at least weather effects will be dampened and fire won’t hurt quite as much.

6 Equip Frost Weapons

The best way to combat Surtr is by using the opposite of his element, naturally. Frost weapons will deal much more damage to him than any other weapon type. Obviously, you’ll also want to avoid using fire weapons against him.

You’ll only find axes and bows imbued with frost abilities. If this isn’t the build you want, you can simply craft more than one weapon that you can switch out as you please.

5 Get Rid Of Totems Right Away

Surtr summons totems that will appear in the left and right pits. They send out lava that will come for you incessantly. You shouldn’t wait to get rid of these totems. You can get back to the big bad after you’ve downed them.

They won’t constantly come up, but you’ll know they’re coming when lava appears in the main arena. Because of the lava, you’ll need to use ranged attacks to damage them without harming yourself.

4 Balance Ranged And Melee Attacks

players attack Surtr from different points, with one melee in center and two ranged

The best loadout will be one melee weapon and a bow. This way, you can easily switch up your tactics and change positions without having to sacrifice your DPS. This allows you to keep moving and finding optimal spots for attack regardless of what moves Surtr employs.

Some of Surtr’s moves take up large portions of the arena, so there are moments where you’ll really get up close and personal with him and have a lot of time to hack and slash. When he goes for close-range attacks with his hands or summons fire to make the middle platform unusable, you’ll want to have a bow to keep hitting him from a safe distance.

3 Avoid The Pits

Pits fill with lava as Surtr summons fire circles in the center of the arena

There are two pits in the arena that you can clearly see are recessed. While this may seem like as good a spot as any to hit him with ranged attacks and avoid his hits, they will fill up with lava that very quickly eats up your health points.

Even when he summons fire to the arena, avoid the temptation to seek refuge in the pits. With some bad timing, you can end up trapping yourself while lava or more fire circles come up.

2 Learn His Telegraphed Attacks

Surtr summons fire circles surrounding player in the center

The key to avoiding damage in this fight is constant movement and awareness. Surtr may be powerful, but his moves are very telegraphed and not hard to spot. When you know what to look out for, you can traverse the arena with more ease.

When he waves his hands around, he is summoning fire circles. You can easily spot where they will rain down by the circles that appear on the ground. He also has an attack where he starts to bring his fists together in the middle. This will damage and grip anyone in the top center lane, and will release a line of fire downwards after he releases his grip.

Surtr will also slam his fist down the arena, alternating between hands. This slam will also cause fire to go down that lane. Check which hand is free and gripping the edge of the level, as that will be free to attack.

1 Watch For Deadlier Blows When Surtr’s Health Drops

Surtr smashes his sword down onto left side of the arena

Once you’ve gotten Surtr’s health past the halfway point, he’ll start getting antsy and add new attacks to his repertoire. When you have the audacity to cut them down, god-like beings tend to retaliate with even more aggression. When will they learn?

No worries, though, as you can avoid these new attacks just as easily. First, watch for his sword sweep, which will hit either side of the level. A quick dodge toward the middle of the arena will save your skin. An orb of fire pulsing from his chest is also a sign to move away from the center lane, as that will lead into Surtr blowing a continuous stream of flame that leaves lingering pools of fire in its wake.

He’ll also summon more fire circles that will cover even more ground. With these, you just have to keep running until you hit the small free space that’s fire-free. The totems and his slams will come with a force, too, but if you follow the tips above, you’ll have Surtr cooked in no time.
