Turtle Rock Studios addressed Back 4 Blood's difficulty issues across all platforms, assuring players the team is hearing all the concerns and trying to make things right.

Back 4 Blood's recent update resulted in unintentional Ridden Mutations spawning problems, leading to an unfair amount of special enemies overwhelming the Cleaners. Shortly after that, the team released a quick fix, believing the players wouldn't face the same issue again, but it didn't work. Turns out, there are some bugs in the game that make it far more difficult to fix than intended, and the team is investigating the problem so it can release a new solution as soon as possible.

Following Back 4 Blood's November update, the devs addressed the case on Reddit. According to the latest message, the spawning system is one of the most complex areas of the game, so fixes here inherently carry a lot of risks. A large part of your satisfaction with Back 4 Blood depends on the difficulty, therefore the devs must deliver just the right balance through the constant adjustment to the card systems, spawning systems, AI director, and other facets that affect gameplay.

Right now, the goal is to make everything depend on the players' actions: skill, planning, and teamwork. The devs believe a bit of difficulty can add a lot of replayability to the game, and it needs to be "just right." The idea is to keep things tense and challenging, but fair and manageable. In the end, the devs thanked the community for their patience and support on the road to making Back 4 Blood a better game over time.

With future updates, the team wants to support a variety of playstyles in Back 4 Blood, especially addressing the players who are using the speedrun deck on higher difficulties, leaving the rest of the team behind. The devs also try to bring melee builds in line with other viable builds. This is a work in progress now, therefore you should expect many more balance changes — nerfs are coming too.

Earlier, the devs revealed their first roadmap for Back 4 Blood, detailing the planned content updates coming later this year and beyond. It seems December will bring plenty of new features, including a new card type, new supply lines, a Ridden practice area, and a holiday seasonal event. As for 2022, players can expect a new difficulty mode, co-op mode, player cards, and corruption cards — all as free updates for existing players.
