We already know that there's a Twisted Metal TV series in the works with PlayStation Productions. Deadpool and Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are penning the screenplay, while Cobra Kai's Michael Jonathan Smith will executive produce.

There's still no word on when the show will hit streaming platforms, but when it does, it might come alongside a brand new Twisted Metal game.

GamesBeat's Jeff Grubb recently went on the Giant Bomb video show to reveal what he knew about a new Twisted Metal game. “I think Twisted Metal is in the works but it may still be a ways off, so I think we’re early,” said Grubb, adding that Sony is "broadening" its strategy when it comes to game releases.

Discussing the coming Twisted Metal TV series, Grubb compared it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how Marvel lines up games to arrive alongside its movies. He added, "I think there’s a thought inside of Sony that, ‘hey, we make movies, why aren’t we capitalizing on that?’”

It seems that Twisted Metal is still in early development, which likely means that the TV show is also some ways off. Grubb further mentioned that franchise creator David Jaffe is not involved in the new game, which corroborates an earlier report where Jaffe said Sony hadn't contacted him about a Twisted Metal sequel.

"I don't think I’m Sony's favorite person right now,” said Jaffe, “[but] if it’s true I would be very, very hurt that PlayStation didn't ask for my input at best, or at worst, at least let me know it was happening."

Twisted Metal hasn't seen a new game since 2012's PS3 remake of the same name. The game reimagined Twisted Metal's gameplay to include more of each character's backstory while retaining the same vehicular-based action. Although the game received generally positive reviews, sales weren't quite enough to reignite the series.
