In the second round of today’s UMG Friday Fortnite tournament, during the highly anticipated Ninja/Pewdiepie vs. DrDisrespect/Arkhram match, Twitch chat crashed for nearly an hour. In response, Twitch Support tweeted “We are looking into the issue causing the site not to load, we’re very sorry for the trouble!”

Crashes and temporary outages on Twitch are not unheard of, however what makes this situation notable is that UMG Friday Fortnite has a weekly $10,000 prize awarded to viewers for actively participating in chat during the tournament. While the prize money will most certainly still be awarded fairly, it does present an interesting concern.

The fan favorite tournament returned last week after debuting in 2018 thanks to a generous $60,000 donation from FaZe Clan. Unlike a traditional head-to-head matchmaking system, UMG Friday Fortnite organizes team of two into four man lobbies and pits them against each other in public matchmaking: the team with the most kills after two matches advances to the next round. Viewers have the option of watching the official UMG stream, or any of the individual competitors streams for a chance to win the $10,000 prize.

This week, Popular Fortnite streamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and Youtuber Felic “PewDiePie” Kjellberg teamed up to boost viewership into the stratosphere. Evidently, it worked, because just as the second round began by pitting Ninja against his sometimes rival DrDisrespect, Twitch chat went down on both of their channels, and many others throughout the site. Twitch Support acknowledged the outage at 1:56PM PT and at 2:48PM PT tweeted “The site is returning to normal as we continue to recover from this issue.

Ninja and PewDiePie managed to win the match by a slight margin but were defeated in the third round by TSM MYTH and Liquid Poach. The success they did have is remarkable considering PewDiePie did not personally manage to get a single kill. The team had an opportunity to continue on in the losers bracket but PewDiePie bowed out, explaining that he needed to go buy dog food to feed his dogs. You can see him break the news to his teammate Ninja below.

At the time of publishing the winner of the active viewer prize has not yet been determined. Last week’s winner is said to have won while watching Ninja’s stream. You can watch UMG Friday Fortnite for your chance to win every Friday on Twitch starting at 1PM PT.
