The popular and often controversial Twitch streamer Macaiyla has successfully campaigned for her ban to be reduced and is now streaming once again. Viewers can now check out her channel following the incident that caused all the trouble in the first place: a moment’s glimpse at a pair of breasts on a Twitter feed.

The streamer received a three-day suspension following a violation of Twitch policy. The issue was that Macaiyla displayed her Twitter timeline while she was streaming, which showed a nude image which goes against the Community Guidelines set forth by Twitch. She went on to explain that there was nothing she could really do about it, and Twitter does not provide warning is what follows on a timeline is safe for work or not safe for work content.

The argument is weak of course, since she is clearly familiar with Twitch and Twitter, and the obvious move is not to expose a channel to media that one has no control over. Still, Macaiyla argued on that the action was not her fault, and that the suspension should be reduced in length.

As appears to be common now among Twitch streamers, Macaiyla was not the only one this week banned for similar violations of the Twitch Community Guidelines. Recently Kaitlyn “Amouranth” Siragusa received a ban after exposing herself, but she was back online and broadcasting less than a day later.

With regards to accidentally showing nudity, Macaiyla is not the first to have done so. That goes to former Overwatch player Félix “xQc” Lengyel who received a three-day Twitch ban this past July for watching sexually suggestive videos.

The issue of inadvertently showing nudity is also one that Twitch itself is familiar with, as most will recall how the channel belonging to Tyler “Ninja” Blevins was used inappropriately, but for far longer. Following Ninja’s move to Mixer, someone hijacked the former streamer’s channel and used it to stream pornography. Oddly, Twitch did not ban itself for the error.

In all seriousness, Twitch apologized, but many were highly critical of the mistake, including Macaiyla. It is ironic to see the current state of affairs where the streamer has received a short ban for the same behavior, she was critiquing only a while ago.

In truth, the discussion should instead reconsider the bannable offense that has started this all, which was the showing of breasts on screen. Do we censor shirtless men on Twitch? Not at all, and yet women’s breasts are off limits, according to the Community Guidelines.

This seems contrary to Twitch’s own decision making, as seen recently with streamer Heather “HeatheredEffect” Kent, who breastfed her child on stream, only to have the video removed by the moderation team. After a brief discussion on the matter, the decision was reversed, and Twitch confirmed that breastfeeding is not against the Terms of Service agreement.

The overall problem is that parts of these women’s bodies are objectified in different contexts, when something as simple as a pair breasts should not be censored or merit a ban at all.
