I’d like you to meet Orc Run, a Calgary-based Twitch streamer whose signature move is to get all dressed up as an Uruk-Hai from Lord of the Rings and then go on long runs while holding a selfie stick. Okay, it’s a little more complex than that, what with the batteries and the stabilizing arm-mounted camera, but we've got the gist of his shtick down. Running for 10K is hard enough, but running in Lord of the Rings cosplay? That sounds dumber than taking a ring to Mount Doom.
It's a testament to Orc Run's fitness level that he's not only able to finish a 10K race in 54 minutes, but do it wearing bulky equipment, orcish armor, and a facemask. Just like the Mandalorian, Orc Run's mask stays on at all times so nobody can determine his secret identity. Although, we do know that he’s old enough to recommend stretching before running a 10K (which Orc Run forgot to do in yesterday’s marathon).
The Calgary Marathon took place yesterday with runners asked to maintain physical distance thanks to the fourth wave of the pandemic. Orc Run's mask wasn't a requirement, but it was a nice way to tell the locals to mask up even if they're outdoors.
Orc Run didn't just run 10 kilometers in the hot Calgary sun for fun, though. He did it for charity, raising $1,866.00 and passing his goal of $1,500. All proceeds go to The Alex, a Calgary-based non-profit that provides health, social, and community care for the poor.
After the race, Orc Run said he was hungry and, of course, tired. He also noted how his camera gear proved to be extra challenging for the run. “Yeah, near the end there, I couldn’t breathe. My arm was falling off like 3k in, holy s--t that was nuts.”
