Unless you're lucky enough to have been living under a rock for the past two weeks, you will have heard Elon Musk now owns Twitter. The billionaire CEO has been instigating a lot of radical changes behind the scenes at the social media platform, including mass layoffs. Turns out Musk isn't allowed to just march in and do that, and he may now face a lawsuit for his proposed actions.A new report from Bloomberg has revealed a class action lawsuit has been filed against Twitter following the threat that as many as 3,700 employees at the platform would be losing their jobs with very little notice. Twitter's HQ is based in California, and laying off staff in large numbers without giving them the required amount of notice isn't just a horrible thing to do, but it flies in the face of the state's WARN act.“The federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act restricts large companies from mounting mass layoffs without at least 60 days of advance notice,” the WARN act reads. Needless to say, affected employees haven't been given 60 days notice since Musk hasn't been in charge for 60 days. Not even close.
“We filed this lawsuit tonight in an attempt the make sure that employees are aware that they should not sign away their rights and that they have an avenue for pursuing their rights,” Shannon Liss-Riordan, the attorney who filed the lawsuit explained. Liss-Riordan is all-too-familiar with Musk, having filed a very similar class action lawsuit against him in the past. That came when he tried to lay off 10 percent of the Tesla workforce without giving them enough notice.
The whole situation surrounding Musk's Twitter takeover is beginning to verge on the bizarre. The Tesla owner has detailed his plans to charge people for their verified blue check marks, first claiming they will soon cost $20 per month. Musk then backtracked a little, suggesting a revamped version of Twitter Blue for $8 per month that would include verification.
