Ghost Recon Frontline — the first game in the series to include up to 102 players at once — is not the title fans were expecting after the Breakpoint release, judging by first reactions. However, Ubisoft believes Frontline feels "different in many ways" from its battle royale competitors and is still a tactical shooter at its core.

Frontline was unveiled during the Ghost Recon 20 years celebration event, but the fan reaction to the series shift wasn't quite what Ubisoft hoped for, it seems. It's still early on, but the developers behind the battle royale are already communicating a brand new vision for the series, and the team is highlighting how the installment will stand out from a sea of similar games.

Speaking to GamesRadar+, brand director Stefan Marinescu said, "it's very important to understand how [Frontline is] different in many ways." In his words, the new Ghost Recon is not a complete departure from the battle royale genre but still boasts plenty of significant changes as "a tactical, action, massive PvP shooter" — that's what the team wants to call the game.

"We didn't want to come to the market with the same thing as everyone else," Marinescu told GamesRadar. "It was always about our vision of it. Within the team, we are gamers, and we are all shooter gamers. [...] We have this experience, and Frontline is our own very personal take on the genre, and what an authentic, massive military shooter would ideally be as per our vision. That is why we did not go for the same recipe."

The company has a long road ahead of it when it comes to convincing fans, as many don't seem happy with the new direction for the franchise. Right now, the reveal trailer is getting ratio'd everywhere on YouTube, with the official upload sitting at three dislikes for every one like.

Comments on the video reveal how players feel about Frontline. One popular question asks, "Is there a microtransaction I can pay for that will make you guys finally release an authentic, single-player, military-espionage Tom Clancy game?" while another read, "Dude, can't wait for Assassin's Creed: Warzone." Many fans shared their surprise over how out-of-touch Ubisoft seems to be when it comes to crafting experiences its fanbase wants from the popular franchise moving forward. "Ghost Recon - not a single silenced weapon in the whole trailer," another YouTuber added.

Ghost Recon Frontline is still early on development — there's no release window for the title at this point.
