Ubisoft's social deduction game Werewolves Within is getting a film adaptation, for some reason.

This rather strange endeavor will be brought to life by Scare Me director Josh Ruben, writer Mishna Wolff, and a cast of familiar faces such as Catherine Curtin (Orange is the New Black), Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story) and Glenn Fleshler (True Detective).

At its heart, the VR-exclusive game which was released back in 2016 is a classic whodunnit, wherein players must deduce who amongst them are innocent villagers, and which ones are werewolves. It adds a medieval flavor to the original party game Mafia (also known as Werewolf), wherein everyone must vote and eliminate all suspected werewolves disguised as villagers.

Whilst the film shares the game's name, its werewolf theme, and whodunnit premise, there are evidently a few demonstrations of artistic license. In lieu of the game's cartoonish medieval setting is the small town of Beaverfield set in modern times, wherein its residents get trapped in an inn during a snowstorm.

It's at this point when some mysterious killer comes along and starts picking them off one by one. The task falls on the new forest ranger to find out who (or what) it is and put a stop to all the killing.

You don't think it could possibly be...a werewolf...could it?

While the Werewolves Within game clearly doesn't take itself very seriously, the film looks like it'll be kicking the tongue-in-cheek absurdity up to a new level. The film's own description alone of a "hilarious horror whodunnit" ought to reassure you of that.

So, if you have a certain hankering for a good ol' fashion screamy scare fest that will probably not keep you up at night, Werewolves Within will be out in North American cinemas on June 25, 2021. It'll also have a video-on-demand launch a few days later, on July 2.
