Sony Pictures has officially wrapped filming of the forthcoming Uncharted film, directed by Ruben Fleischer and written by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. The movie, which serves as an origin story for Nathan Drake from the video game series of the same name, stars Tom Holland as Drake and Mark Wahlberg as his mentor Victor Sullivan, or Sully. The supporting cast includes Antonio Banderas, Sophia Taylor Ali, and Tati Gabrielle.
The action-adventure third-person game series, which was developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for PlayStation consoles, revolves around Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter who crisscrosses the globe to discover historical mysteries. The series has been universally acclaimed and has shipped more than 41 million units, becoming one of the best-selling game franchises of all time.
Production on the film began in Germany in March but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shooting resumed in July with Holland and the rest of the cast filming their final scenes over the last three months. Holland will now return to his role as Spider-Man, with production on the third installment of the Marvel film series beginning soon.
In Uncharted, Holland stars as a young fortune-hunter who claims to be descended from renowned British explorer Sir Francis Drake. Wahlberg co-stars as a fellow treasure hunter who eventually becomes Nate's mentor and father figure as the story progresses. Wahlberg was originally set to take on the lead role when the film was in development with David O. Russell at the helm back in 2010. A year later, Russell left the film to direct Silver Linings Playbook.
Uncharted, which is a prequel to the video game series, is set to be released in the United States on July 16, 2021, in IMAX, RealD 3D, and Dolby Cinema. Given the success of the video game franchise, the film is already expected to have several sequels.
