The audience at an upcoming Undertale concert will have the ability to create their own Pacifist and Genocide routes, as they will be able to vote on the choices that the main character makes in order to decide the course of the story.
One of the most important aspects of Undertale is the player's capacity to kill or spare their enemies. The player can choose to spare all of the monsters that inhabit the Underground and make it to the end of the game without taking a single life. It's also possible for the player to slaughter every creature they encounter and leave nothing but dust in their wake. The story of Undertale changes drastically depending on these decisions and the player needs to experience every route in order to learn the truth behind the events of the game.
The upcoming Undertale LIVE concert in Chicago will emulate the choices available to the player in Undertale by allowing the audience to make decisions that will alter the course of the story. The visuals of the concert will reflect the choices that they made using graphics from the original game.
Undertale creators Toby Fox has talked about his enthusiasm for Undertale LIVE and how the game experience will be transplanted to that of a live concert.
“I'm interested to see what people will choose, and to hear the arrangements. For me, part of the charm of classic ‘video game music,’ with its simple-sounding instruments and strong melodies, is that it leaves a space for the listener's imagination,” said Fox. “The simplicity becomes a blank canvas from which people can draw out more complicated or colorful arrangements. The ensemble will be made up of a more eclectic combination of instruments than a typical concert, so I believe it will be a really memorable experience in all respects.”
The songs from Undertale have been featured in numerous video game music concerts over the years, but Undertale LIVE is aiming to offer a unique experience that matches the tone of the original game. The concert is a co-production of Fifth House Ensemble and AWR Music Productions, in creative partnership with Materia Collective and Fangamer. The initial two performances in Chicago will be followed by a tour, with dates to be announced in the future.
The first two Undertale LIVE concerts will happen at the Studebaker Theater in Chicago on January 11 & 12, 2020. Tickets can be purchased here.
