The fabled crossover between the Super Smash Bros. series and Undertale is finally happening... sort of. It has been confirmed that Sans from Undertale is receiving a Mii Fighter costume in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate which will also add the incredible "Megalovania" boss theme to the game.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is due to receive a new patch that will add Banjo-Kazooie to the game, as well as bringing back the Home Run Contest mode. The new patch will also add new Mii Fighter costumes, including Team Rocket Grunts and Proto Man.
Masahiro Sakurai revealed in a presentation that followed today's Nintendo Direct that one of the new Mii Fighter costumes is based on Sans from Undertale, who is a Mii Gunner. The costume will cost seventy-five cents and it comes with a remix of "Megalovania" that was created by Toby Fox. Sans' weapon is based on the Gaster Blaster that he uses during the boss battle at the end of the Genocide run of Undertale.
Masahiro Sakurai also discussed Toby Fox during the presentation. Sakurai talked about how Fox visited his house and that they played Super Smash Bros. Ultimate together and how he was the strongest guest he had at his house in terms of the game. Sakurai mentioned that the win-loss ratio between the two was about even, though Sakurai may have been at a disadvantage.
Undertale fans have wanted a representative in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate since launch and the fact that Sakurai has discussed the game in the past seemed like a strong indication that it was possible. There was also a reference to the Super Smash Bros. series in Deltarune. The fact that Sans is a Mii Fighter costume seems to put the possibility of a true Undertale rep to bed and it's a shame that other songs from the game (like "Battle Against a True Hero") are not included as part of the costume, but at least Undertale has received recognition in the game.
There is one thing that is for sure though - there will be a glut of Sans/Mii Gunners at Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournaments in the near future. The migration will soon begin.
