With less than a month until the release of the highly anticipated Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the Nintendo Switch, excited players have been eagerly preparing to make their move to island living and see their favorite villagers again.

With so much hype surrounding the game, smart gamers will have already pre-ordered their game by this point. It's not difficult to pre-order the game, as many major retailers - such as Target, Walmart, and Best Buy - have already confirmed they'll be carrying it. However, one retailer, popular clothing chain Urban Outfitters, who previously promised fans they could pre-order a special Animal Crossing: New Horizons bundle is suddenly canceling preorders due to overselling.

The news broke yesterday on Twitter, courtesy of the Animal Crossing Pocket News (@ACPocketNews) account. The tweet contained a screenshot of a message from Urban Outfitters, explaining that, due to a system error, the retailer accepted more orders for the Animal Crossing: New Horizons bundle than they could fulfill. Those customers who were unlucky enough to receive this email learned that their orders would be canceled and refunded in the next couple of days.

Additionally, in a fashion highly reminiscent to the 2014 DashCon "extra hour in the ball pit" fiasco, customers whose orders had been canceled were made aware they'd receive a $10 promo code to make up for the oversight.

Customers whose orders had been canceled were pretty disappointed, to say the least.

Some were upset over the pathetic $10 promo code apology, pointing out that, given Urban Outfitter's usual pricing options, that amount of money would barely get them anything.

Other replies were just genuinely shocked to discover Urban Outfitters sold games and gaming consoles.

Some replies pointed out the shady nature of the mistake, indicating how those who ordered from Urban Outfitters will still have to shop at their store.

Several other replies commented on Urban Outfitter's attempt to appeal to gamers, pointing out that though their intentions were probably in the right place, the outcome of this unfortunate situation serves as a good lesson on knowing what their brand's strengths and weaknesses are.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be released worldwide for the Nintendo Switch on March 20, 2020. The game is available for pre-order now for $59.99.
