Most bosses in V Rising have a set location, and can be tracked via the use of the Blood Altar structure. A certain untrackable boss is infamous for frustrating a number of players, due to its ambiguous location. However, in actuality, the Putrid Rat is surprisingly simple to find, as long as you know where to look!

This guide will instruct you how to summon the Putrid Rat boss, how to battle it, and what rewards you will gain from besting it in combat.

Putrid Rat's Location

V Rising Putrid Rat Vermin Nest

Upon reading the Putrid Rat's description, you will notice that it is unable to be tracked. This is because the boss has to be summoned via the Vermin Nest structure. Requiring three hundred and sixty Stone, and one hundred and twenty Bones, the Nest will allow you to spawn various types of rodents, including the boss itself. To summon the Putrid Rat you will have to provide:

  • One Twilight Snapper
  • Four Fish Bones
  • Eight Grave Dust

The Grave Dust can be acquired from Skeleton mobs and from within Cemeteries, and should not be much of a problem to locate. Likewise, the Fish Bones can be picked up early from various Bandit Camps and destroyable boxes. By this stage of the game you will likely have these resources already stashed away in one of your chests. The real problem is the Twilight Snapper, a fish that must be fished from a water source via the use of a Fishing Pole.

The Fishing Rod can be crafted at your Woodworking Bench for the cost of:

  • Eight Planks
  • Four Copper Ingots
  • Four Coarse Threads

Once you have crafted the Pole, you must find a body of water that has bubbling fish shoals. From there, use your Fishing Pole and click on the shoal. Now you must wait until the bubbling water splashes, before clicking again to catch a fish. Sometimes you will not be rewarded with any fish, and whatever you catch will be random, so you may have to wait awhile until you find a Twilight Snapper. There is currently no known way to influence or determine which fish you can catch, and the shoals can be fairly tricky to locate. A good spot is typically the North Eastern river in Farbane Woods, and the long embankment normally has two to three fish shoals. Despite this, any body of water may contain one.

The fish you catch with the Pole can be put into the Devourer structure in order to obtain Fish Bones and Fish Scales.

Once you have obtained all the necessary materials, place them into the Vermin Nest to begin the summoning. Once the thirty-second crafting timer is complete the Putrid Rat will automatically be summoned, so be sure you and your clan are prepared for the boss fight.

Battle Strategy

V Rising Putrid Rat Boss Fight

The Putrid Rat is a combat level thirty boss and is not a particularly difficult encounter. He will generally just melee attack anyone who comes into range of him, and his attacks are not particularly powerful. Every so often he will completely vanish, and spawn large amounts of Giant Rat minions. This is where you will want to use your AoE abilities, as the rats are not very strong and can be cleaved down fairly easily.

Some Merciless Nightstalker Armour and a Merciless Copper weapon are easily strong enough to take down the Rat, and the major difficulty of the boss is simply to summon him in the first place. For spells, Aftershock and Corpse Explosion are good choices for high AoE damage, and should be more than enough to help you clear out the Giant Rats.

Putrid Rat's Rewards

V Rising Putrid Rat Blood Altar

The Putrid Rat only provides you with one reward for drinking his V Blood, and that is the Rat Form Vampire Power. An interesting spell, its uses are limited in PvE content, but it can be devastating in PvP. You will be transformed into a tiny rat, giving enemies a decreased aggro range. This allows you to scurry about Bandit Camps mostly uncontested, although enemies will still attack you if you get too close, and any damage taken will break the spell. You do not move any faster while transformed into a Rat, and the decreased aggro range is not high enough to make this a truly amazing ability, but it can save you the headache of constantly fighting your way through an entire camp of enemies.

Rat Form's major use is in PvP, where the removal of your health bar means you can launch a surprisingly effective attack on other players. Most players will not be expecting you to travel in Rat Form, and it can be a great way of sneaking either up to or away from your enemies.
