Survival co-op is thriving more than ever, and Valheim has put itself front and center of the genre. This promising, procedurally generated adventure for up to ten players caught the eye of gamers everywhere when it dropped in early access in 2021.
No game is perfect, no matter how fun and immersive they are, and that’s why mods were invented. Even unfinished, there are areas of improvement in Valheim that modders aim to fix while the developers work on bigger additions. 10 Bigger Item Stack
Realism is almost always appreciated in gaming, except when it comes to item weight and carrying capacity. Nobody wants to be told just how many sticks they can and can’t carry. The Bigger Item Stack mod from sixefyle is a simple and straightforward fix for this problem.
If you want to be able to carry bigger stacks of items and dictate how you live your own life, then who is Valheim to say no? This mod gives you bigger stacks of items that you can choose the size of. Carry things to your heart’s content, or more specifically, the maximum number the mod can actually allow.
9 Equipment In Water
Being vulnerable while you’re swimming can be annoying, but wasting valuable time you could be using to get things done while you’re in the water is even worse. The Use Equipment In Water mod from ElTheLedge helps tremendously with both of these problems.
The mod allows you to pick which pieces of equipment you can and can’t use while in the water, which prevents you from pulling out anything you wouldn’t actually want to. On top of this, it lets you get to work without waiting to fully climb out of the murky depths.
8 Auto Fuel
Not a lot of people want to stand by a boiling hot oven all day waiting for hunks of metal and whatever else you threw in there to be done doing its thing. The Auto Fuel mod by aedenthorn is a big time-saver and leaves you some free time for having a bit of fun or collecting extra resources.
Fuel and ore for the kilns and smelters are pulled up from the ground automatically and added to the devices, taking half the work out of smithing for you. At least it’s the boring half!
7 FarmGrid
Farming in any survival or resource management game can get tedious fast, and placing things in the right spot, just so it all looks good, is next to impossible sometimes. Luckily, there’s a mod for that too.
Farmgrid by Sarcenzzz is a mod that solves most of your farming woes and takes the most annoying part out of the task for you. Using the cultivator snaps plants into an automatic grid with enough space between them to grow perfectly. No more guesswork while you’re farming, and no more replanting over and over to get things just right.
6 Got the Time?
It’s easier to keep track of your day when you have a visual aid on screen for you at all times. Especially when you’re doing a lot of time-based tasks and activities. The Clock mod from Nexus modder aedenthorn is simple and effective.
It is just a configurable clock on the screen that shows you what day it is, as well as the time of day. If that feels like it’s making the game too easy for you, but still don't want to totally lose track of time, you can modify it to only display a vague general portion of the day you’re on.
5 Plant It All
Survival and management games can’t always allow you to grow all the plants and trees in-game, and it’s frustrating sometimes when you look at assets that you can’t use yourself. The Plant Everything mod by Advize remedies this problem and opens that asset box up and lets your green finger run wild.
Every unplantable bit of greenery you were looking at before is now plantable - even the bushes and shrubberies. Whether you’re expanding your decorative options or getting a more realistic farm going, you’re now even more free to plant every kind of plant you can find in the game.
4 Equipment Slots
Just a few extra slots in your inventory can really make a difference when you’re collecting resources and getting a lot of crafting done. The Equipment & Quick Slots mod by randyknapp adds dedicated slots for equipped items, giving you a little more wiggle room in your inventory.
In addition, this mod adds three quick slots that you can hotkey to bring up items in a flash whenever you need them. This mod can be a lifesaver when you’re in the thick of exploring and need a little bit of a leg-up.
3 Better Archery
Archery mechanics can be hit-and-miss in games that aren’t designed specifically around archery. In Valheim, the bow gameplay is basic so far, but there is a lot of room for improvement. The Better Archery mod by Ishid4 does some improving of its own, and it’s an impressive mod.
The aiming and physics are improved, and there’s a zoom toggle when drawing the bow. The mod also allows you to retrieve your arrows, which is a tremendous help, as crafting a lot of them and losing them right away is a big pain.
2 Unrestricted Portals
The existence of Portals in Valheim makes a lot of hard work a little bit simpler. You don’t have to use them, but they’re wildly useful if you choose to. The Unrestricted Portals mod by xAfflict adds a few more options to the portals.
Namely, the ability to pick and choose what can come through the portal. Opening them up to all items makes lugging around ores, scraps, and dragon eggs a lot easier than it was before. Save your ships some wear and tear and give those portals more work to do.
1 Valheim Plus
This mod is Valheim, but with a little bit more. The Valheim Plus mod by nXxyz improves the gameplay and quality of life in Valheim significantly, and makes most processes and menus easier to deal with. Valheim Plus tweaks just about every aspect of the game, and it’s a long list of features to sift through.
Hopefully, as Valheim evolves, the Valheim Plus mod will adapt and grow with it. Having an active modding community that has this much care and love for a game will ensure that it lives a long life on hard drives everywhere.
