While wolves are naturally aggressive, you can tame them to gain a furry companion that will fight you. With all the dangerous enemies in Valheim, a partner in Viking-crime can prove to be quite helpful.

Updated May 17, 2023 by Jacqueline Zalace: Wolves are the most dangerous animal that you can tame in Valheim. If you are still looking to prove your worth and wrangle this creature, you're in luck. We've updated this guide with even more information on how to tame wolves.

How To Find Wolves In The Wild

Mountain Biome

First, you’ll need to have access to the Mountain biome, as wolves naturally spawn here. Mountain biomes are spread throughout the world and are noticeable by the white appearance on the map.

Within the Mountains, wolves will spawn pretty much anywhere during both night and day. If you are looking for a large group of wolves, they tend to be more plentiful during the middle of the night. If you seek out wolves during the night, be prepared for danger! Wolves are aggressive, and a group of upwards of six of them can quickly kill you.

Capturing A Wolf

As with taming any animal in Valheim, you will first need to set up a pen, so the untamed wolf has a place to stay. Normal roundpole fences won't work for wolf taming; you will need to use larger barriers, such as the stakewall.

Overall, try building a cage using stakewalls, while leaving a small gap in your fence so the wolf will be able to enter. We also recommend building a platform, so you can jump out once the wolf enters the cage.

Luring A Wolf

Now that the trap is set, it's time to find some wolves. Once you’ve found a wolf, have it chase you into the pen and then construct the final sharp stake wall, so it can’t escape. There is no shortcut to this, you will basically need to kite the wolf all the way to the pen.

We recommend eating stamina-boosting foods prior to doing this, so you can run ahead of the wolf. Additionally, you can use Eikthyr's power to help manage your stamina levels.

Taming Your Wolves

Now that the wolf is trapped, all you need is to start feeding it. Wolves will eat the following foods.

  • Boar Meat
  • Deer Meat
  • Lox Meat
  • Neck Tail
  • Raw Fish
  • Sausages

Tossing one of these foods into your pen will cause the wolf to eat it, and become a bit more acclimated to your presence.

Once the food is tossed into the pen, take a step back and wait for the wolf to eat. After a few feedings, the wolf will be tamed. This will take around 30 minutes if you feed them whenever hungry.

How To Make A Wolf Follow You

After you successfully tamed your wolf, you can get it to follow you around by interacting with it. Interacting again will make the wolf stay in place until you tell it to move again. Keep in mind that you can have up to four wolves following you at any time.

How To Breed Wolves

Instead of taming a wolf every time you want one, you can breed them. This will let you create a small army of wolf guards, or breed them for meat and pelt.

To breed wolves, you will need to have well-fed wolves. This can be done by simply feeding them some meat until they are happy. From here, just keep two wolves in a pen. For the wolves to breed, there cannot be another wolf nearby. Additionally, there should not be four wolves within ten meters of the breeding couple. For the best results, place the two breeding wolves in their own pen.

From here, you don't need to do anything! Well-fed wolves will breed without being prompted.

After a short period of time, a baby wolf will be born. This baby won't provide any materials or protection, but once it matures, it functions like any other wolf. Wolves born in captivity don't need to be tamed, so you don't have to waste time and resources taming newborns.
