Valheim is all about exploring the land. After all, if you want to defeat all the bosses or craft better weapons, you'll need to go through each biome to see what it has to offer. Moreover, each world seed is procedurally generated, so it's not like everything will be in the same spot in each seed you play in, forcing you to find where everything is all over again.

Sure, there are some things you can do to make moving around a little bit easier, like building boats to sail the ocean or building bridges across lands. Still, one of the most effective ways to getting exactly where you want to be is by building Portals. These buildable structures will help you teleport from point A to point B. Here's everything you need to know about how to craft them.

How To Build Portals

Like with all the other buildable things in this game, you'll have to first gather the ingredients before considering moving to the crafting part. To craft portals, you'll need:

  • Ten Greydwarf eyes: a material dropped by Greylings, Greydwarfs, Greydwarf Brutes, and Greydwarf Shamans.
  • 20 Fine wood: a crafting resource you'll obtain by hitting Birch or Oak trees. Both tree species are found in the Meadows and in the Plains biomes. You could also get fine wood by looting Shipwrecks on the coasts of the Black Forest biome; just make sure to equip a Stone axe.
  • Two Surtling cores: an item you'll find in Burial Chambers or in random chests; it also drops as loot from Surtlings.

Once you have all the materials, head over to the Workbench and create your Portal. Keep in mind that you'll need a Workbench nearby to place a Portal, but afterward, you don't need one to stay in range so the Portal can work.

How To Connect Portals

When you build two portals, they will automatically connect. However, the best way to connect them is by giving them tags.

  • Once two Portals have the same label, they'll be connected.

Just keep in mind that these tags are case sensitive, and if multiple Portals have the same labels, only the first two ones will be connected, deeming the rest inactive.

Once you start getting the hang of building and connecting Portals, you may begin to forget where you placed them. To avoid that, simply place a marker on your map where the Portal location is.

Objects That Can't Go Through Portals

items prevent you from using portals Valheim

In your travels through Valheim's map, you'll collect a wide array of items, materials, and ingredients. While most of them will be helpful, not everything you obtain can go through a Portal, thus preventing you from teleporting.

These objects are easy to recognize since they have a little blue portal icon with a red cross on it. Here's the complete list of items that can't be teleported:

  • Tin ore

  • Bronze
  • Scrap iron

  • Silver ore

  • Dragon egg
  • Black metal scrap

When that happens, you have two options, either drop the objects from your inventory or use other means of transportation, like boats, to get back to your base.
