The last biome you are able to explore in Valheim so far is the Plains. Made up of long blades of brown grassland, the Plains biomes could be mistaken for desert geography on your map.

These grasslands harbor some of the toughest threats yet, along with several important crafting and cooking materials. If you're just setting out on your first expedition into the Plains, here's everything you'll need to know.

Plains Biome Resources

The flora that grows within the Plains biome consists of Cloudberries, Barley, and Flax. The latter two can be harvested in Fuling Villages, though Barley is the more common of the two.

  • Cloudberries grow on bushes, just as Blueberries or Raspberries grow in other biomes. You can also acquire them by taming a Lox. Cloudberries are used in the Fire Resistance Barley Wine and Medium Stamina Mead base recipes and are a key ingredient in Lox Meat Pies.
  • Barley must be processed through a Windmill to create Barley Flour. The flour is then used in some of the most nutritious meals available in Valheim thus far, including Blood Pudding, Fish Wraps, and Lox Meat Pie.
  • Flax can be spun into Linen Thread on a Spinning Wheel. The thread is then used in several crafting recipes for Blackmetal and Padded gear, along with the Linen Cape and Porcupine mace. Both Flax and Barley can be resewn using a Cultivator. However, Flax will only regrow when planted within the Plains biome. So if your base is back in the Meadows, you might think of establishing a farm in the Plains if not only for this sole purpose.
  • Gull are the only non-aggressive animals you will come across while roaming the Plains. Using a bow and arrow, you can hunt these birds of prey rather easily to obtain feathers for crafting more arrows.

Chests in the plains may spawn Barley, Blackmetal Scrap, coins, Needles from Deathsquitos, or Sharpening Stones. You can find these loot boxes within Fuling Villages. You may find them inside the buildings or sometimes outdoors near a fire or communal gathering spot.

Plains Biome Establishments

Fuling Villages are communities of the goblins known as Fulings in Valheim. These goblins hold various ranks of common Fuling, Berserkers, and Shaman. If you're not prepared for the horde, it's best to give these settlements and wide birth. Even felling trees in close proximity may cause Fulings to start scouting around for the source of the disturbance.

Iron weaponry or something superior is advised for taking on a village, and it's always best to thin their ranks first with a strong bow such as the Draugr Fang. A fully upgraded Draugr Fang coupled with Poison Arrows can eliminate the majority of the threat in a breeze.

A village is made up of several buildings constructed partially of Deer Hide, which you can acquire by destroying the building. Fuling Totems, which are the required offering for summoning Yagluth, can be found inside these buildings. The villages also have a large communal fire pit and usually a Tanning Rack, which you can disassemble for Flint.

Plains Biome Threats

Fulings are the major threat you will face while roaming the plains, but there are the beastly Lox and pesky Deathsquitos to contend with as well.

Lox are an odd combination of a mammal and reptile. They can attack while swimming, making them dangerous to boats that pass too close to shore. However, they have dreadfully poor eyesight, akin to a Rhino, and are virtually deaf on top of that.

This makes them an easy target to sneak up on. You won't even need to crouch. Once defeated, they will drop Lox Meat and Pelts. The Meat can be roasted and then cooked into Lox Meat Pie, while the pelts can be fashioned into a Lox Cape or a nice throw rug.

Deathsquitos are speedy, hostile insects that can make your time roaming the plains complete agony. Though they have very low vitality and die with one blow, they are also capable of dealing devasting damage in a flash, essentially one-hitting unwitting Vikings.

Despite their size, it's easiest to kill Deathsquitos from a distance with a bow and arrow. Wolf Armor or gear superior to the Wolf set is recommended. If your armor isn't up to par, you'll need to make sure you're apparel's not weighing you down at the very least. They won't be able to land a hit on someone running away at top speed.

Time Your Melees Well

When attacking with a melee weapon, any half-decent club or ax will do. Physical combat with these pests is all about timing. It's best to strike as they rush forward to attack you.

After clearing out the Fuling Hordes, hunting Lox, and exterminating the Deathsquito infestation, you will be ready to take on the fifth and so far final boss of the game, Yagluth. For a half of a skeleton, Yagluth is a formidable enemy with devastating fire-based attacks. He's dangerous to get up close with and fairly resistant to ranged attacks. With no sure-fire way to send him back to the grave, you may want to read up on some tips and tricks for besting Yagluth.
