Yes, you can shoot through walls in VALORANT. But the real answer isn’t quite so simple.

VALORANT is still in it’s closed beta testing, so you might not be able to download it yet (unless you get a key). But that said, there are already some pretty big names backing Riot’s new game, and one of them just so happens to be Shroud.

The former CS:GO player received a beta key from Riot early on and has been hard at work creating content for his millions of fans. We recently got a breakdown of all of the weapons in the game, including their stats and how they handle in the hands of a consummate professional.

We also found out something very important: do bullets go through walls? The short answer is yes, they do, but it’s not quite that simple.

Guns in VALORANT fire bullets of varying calibers and those calibers have varying levels of wall penetration. Low wall penetration includes VALORANT’s lightest weapons, such as the Classic pistol and the Bucky shotgun. Medium wall penetrating weapons make up the bulk of VALORANT’s arsenal and include the Spectre SMG and the Bulldog assault rifle. Heavy wall penetration is reserved for the most powerful guns such as the Operator sniper rifle and the Ares LMG.

There are also three material types in VALORANT to consider when shooting through walls: wood, stone, and metal. Wood does little to withstand fire and will allow even low-penetration bullets to go through. Stone does a medium job of stopping bullets and so won’t allow low-penetration arms like the Classic pistol to go through but doesn’t stop medium-penetration rounds. Metal stops all but the high-penetration bullets from something like an Operator sniper rifle.

VALORANT also includes an interesting visual cue to tell you if your weapon is penetrating an object. If you see an orange spark, this means that your bullet is ricocheting harmlessly off a wall. You’ll also note that these rounds aren’t leaving a bullet hole. However, if you see a puff of white smoke and a cratered bullet hole in the wall, this means that the bullet is penetrating the target.

Just as with Counter-Strike, expect penetrating bullets to deal less damage than bullets fired in open air. That said, wall penetration provides you with a key tool to take out adversaries from a safe position.
