Several creations from Gavin Goulden – art director at Insomniac Games – have been stolen for NFTs. Another character artist chimed in, claiming they'll now have to be on the lookout to see if "some assholes are stealing our work for NFTs."

The artwork up for sale on the fake Gouldren account includes designs for Spider-Man: Miles Morales and an old Marvel character, Deathlok.

Adam Fisher – a freelance character artist – also noticed one of his Dark Knight designs up for grabs. The same goes for Jeff Simpson – concept artist at Marvel Studios – who found a Little Mermaid design of his wrongly for sale.

If you happen to be a digital artist of any sort, it might be worth running a quick Google search on your favorite creations, as there seem to be a large number of phony listings currently on the web.

NFTs are all the rage right now, although many people are still murky on the details. Nonfungible tokens (NFTs) are:

"Cryptographic assets on blockchain with unique identification codes and metadata that distinguish them from each other. Unlike cryptocurrencies, they cannot be traded or exchanged at equivalency. This differs from fungible tokens like cryptocurrencies, which are identical to each other and, therefore, can be used as a medium for commercial transactions."

That description probably doesn't mean much to most – but in other words, NFTs allow people to purchase an "original" version of digital artwork. It's essentially a way to brag to your friends that the digital image of Spider-Man on your PC is better than the digital image of Spider-Man on their PC.

It's all a bit convoluted, but many digital artists support these transactions, as it gives them a way to earn a livable income.

However, these scams point to a very real issue with NFTs, as scammers try to make a quick buck on someone else's work.

If you're interested in buying NFTs,  make sure to do your due diligence so you don't get scammed. As for creators, set up some Google alerts for your most prized creations, otherwise someone else might be making a buck off your hard work.
