It's a trope that has kept Hallmark movies and Holiday romcoms alive for decades. The protagonist is coming home for the holidays and, for some reason that makes no social sense, they decide that this is the perfect time to introduce their partner to their family. Hilarity ensues, and after countless highjinx, they find both their relationship with said partner and their family stronger than before.

Of course, this would be ridiculous in real life. But then again, so would be bringing a video game character. Why not combine the two? If you want to impress your family and create a holiday that no one will soon forget, these are the video game characters you'll want to bring with you.

10 Milo (Pokemon Sword & Shield)

Milo Gym Challenge Pokemon Sword SHield

One way to earn the respect of your elders is to work hard and have an impressive career. The other way is just to be big and sweet. Milo nails that last part since he is easily the kindest Gym Leader in all of Pokemon.

A Grass-type specialist and the first Gym Leader you face, Milo is a burly farmer who spends his days herding Wooloo and helping around the town. He would be just as kind and helpful at your family home, whether it's preparing food in the kitchen or wrangling kids. Milo's gentle spirit may just be what your family needs. Plus, having grown up on a farm, you know that Milo can make some great food!

9 Rikku (Final Fantasy 10)

Close up of Rikku in a futuristic tunnel in Final Fantasy 10

The holidays are supposed to be a positive time of celebration and appreciation for what you have. However, that's not the case for everyone. It can be a very tough time for some people, and they can use all the support they can get. A partner who would definitely support you is Rikku.

Rikku brought a necessary levity to the events of Final Fantasy 10. While Tidus could sometimes verge on the side of annoying, Rikku was always a joy and lifted everyone's spirits. But she never did this at the cost of anyone. She's just a happy person who cares about those who are close to her. And what more could you want?

8 Uncle Leo (Fallout 3)

Fallout Random Encounters Uncle Leo meets the player in sadness.

It may seem weird to bring a hulking super mutant to meet your family, with his towering frame and his face in a permanent scowl. But in this case, appearances can be deceiving. Underneath Uncle Leo's bright green skin is a heart of gold.

Usually, when you see a super mutant in Fallout 3, you have to start shooting or running. Uncle Leo is not like other super mutants, instead choosing to wander the wasteland and offer wisdom to anyone wanderer who would speak to him. Uncle Leo is a pacifist and a philosopher, standing out from the various Fallout 3 characters as one of the few unabashedly kind people in the Wasteland. And if someone can remain optimistic in a post-apocalyptic setting, he can handle any dinner your family has prepared.

7 Chun-Li (Street Fighter)

Chun-li prepares her Hoyokusen in a battle against Bison at his Temple Hideout. Street Fighter 5.

Chun-Li is one of the most recognized video game characters of all time. When you think of women in fighting games, she is justifiably the first person that comes to mind. And while she is most known for kicking butt in Street Fighter, it's actually her background that makes Chun-Li the perfect person to meet your family.

Though we know her as a martial artist, Chun-Li is also an Interpol officer whose specialty lies in investigating criminal organizations like Shadaloo. That's a very impressive position that deserves a lot of respect, even from rude family members, and Chun-li would show that same level of respect to your family. She's well known for loving her family and doing whatever it takes to save them, and she would definitely put that same amount of love and effort towards your family.

6 Nathan Drake (Uncharted)

A very important part of any holiday gathering is conversation. You'd want to bring someone who can carry a conversation with anyone they meet, whether it's your five-year-old niece or great-granddad.

Nathan Drake from Uncharted is perfect for this. Not only is he incessantly charming, but he has stories from his adventures that would grab anyone. Each game in the Uncharted series feels like a movie brought to life. Now imagine everyone gathered around the fireplace, egg nog in hand, with Nathan talking about the search for the city of Shambhala. That would be a truly unforgettable holiday.

5 Isabelle (Animal Crossing)

The Animal Crossing series is absolutely delightful with plenty of charismatic villagers to fill your town with personality. And while I'm sure that any villager would make a wonderful guest at your home, the obvious answer here is Isabelle.

Since she debuted in New Leaf, Isabelle has been a series mainstay: helping the player with their mayoral duties and trying to make your home away from home as beautiful as possible. She would be just as sweet and helpful in your real-life home. Plus, Isabelle's sweater game is immaculate and would brighten any holiday gathering.

4 Luigi (Super Mario Bros.)

Luigi is not a man who's used to the spotlight. While Mario is out there saving the Mushroom Kingdom, Luigi gets tricked into buying a haunted house or starts losing keys all over the place. But it's this kind of soft, doofus energy that makes Luigi so lovable!

Mario has this unearned confidence that will come with nailing everything perfectly and always saving the day, but not Luigi. The green man may not always succeed, and he may even get scared, but he will try and support you no matter what happens. Mario may be the hero, but Luigi's a good guy.

3 Julia Chang (Tekken)

Julia Chang from the Tekken series

Unlike Chun-li, Julia Chang is not the most iconic woman in fighting games. She isn't even the most iconic woman from Tekken. But she does have something that few other fighting game characters have: empathy.

Julia's main goal throughout the series is to research reforestation in order to help her homeland (Arizona) as well as other places throughout the world. She'll come to the aid of anyone, whether they were just attacked by Ogre or they couldn't wrestle in the ring anymore. She's kind, and respectful, and will have plenty of stories to keep people entertained from all walks of life.

2 Zagreus (Hades)

Zagreus from Hades

No family is perfect, anyone can tell you that. And it's hard to think of a character who knows that better than Zagreus. He had to navigate many complicated relationships while also navigating the labyrinthian halls of Hades.

But on top of all that he's also persistent. He tried to escape the underworld hundreds if not thousands of times until he eventually succeeded. If your family doesn't like him right away or something goes terribly wrong, you know that he'll work hard to make things right. Add on his charming personality, handsome appearance, and affinity with animals, and you have the makings for the perfect person to bring home to your parents.

1 Just About Anyone (Stardew Valley)

Maru, Shane, Abigail

There are many games out there where you can get married, but few have as many quality partners as Stardew Valley. They each have their own personality traits and quirks that can bring a unique addition to any family gathering.

Would you like someone who loves science and wants to help those in need? Maru would be perfect. How about someone alternative who's into the occult and plays the drums? Then Abigail's your gal! Or how about a guy who seems gruff and antisocial, but you know deep down inside they're a sweet person and you know you can fix them if they just let you in? And they're also really, really handsome? That's Shane. Any of the available partners in Stardew Valley would make an excellent choice because if you like them, then your family will make the effort to make it work.

But the correct answer is Shane.
