August is approaching its final days, but there are still a few big releases on the horizon before the month finally wraps up. The bad news is that September is a bit of a slow month, so we’ll miss the August buzz, but it looks like we’re at least ending this week with plenty of variety. Whether you’re looking for co-op shooters, virtual escape rooms, or single-player adventures steeped in nostalgia - there’s a little bit of everything coming up this week.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite

Date: August 24

Platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Before you ask - it’s not a Left 4 Dead clone. In his preview, associate editor Eric Switzer found Aliens: Fireteam Elite to be much more than a cheap knockoff, calling it a “worthy addition to the [Alien] franchise.” It sounds like there’s plenty of formulas where Aliens will borrow from the Valve classic, but Fireteam Elite looks to sport an extra layer of depth with RPG lite elements that should keep things fresh. If you’re looking for something you can drag three of your closest friends to and sacrifice them to the series’ terrifying xenomorphs, then go ahead and clear your schedule this Tuesday.

I Think You Should Die 2

Date: August 24

The name doesn’t instill much faith in your odds of success, but perhaps you’ll live. This week, developer Schell Games brings you a VR escape room - I Think You Should Die 2 - where you’ll focus on the important things, like not dying. As a super-secret spy, you’ll solve puzzles with telekinetic powers and dig into the secrets of the game’s big bad, Zoraxis.

Psychonauts 2 - via Double Fine

Psychonauts 2

Date: August 25

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, Game Pass, PC

Double Fine’s cult classic is another we’ve already had a chance to try, and our very own George Foster sings its praises in his preview. Calling it a “classic platforming gem,” George already seems optimistic about the sequel’s ability to really deliver an experience just as memorable as the original. For those of you not looking to spend too much money next week, Psychonauts 2 is still a great value to plan for, as the game is also coming to Xbox Game Pass on launch.

No More Heroes 3

Date: August 27

Platforms: Switch

Travis is making his return next week, and Grasshopper Manufacture’s action-adventure title looks as wild as ever. Just last month, we got a preview of some in-game toilet unclogging action - just in case you were concerned there wouldn’t be thrills incorporating the Switch motion controllers. If you’re not super keen on fighting the frightening xenomorphs of aliens, perhaps No More Heroes 3 will be a little more your speed, as Travis Touchdown works to save the world again from an alien invasion and galactic overlord.

Myst Game Pass

Myst

Date: August 26

You did read that correctly, and yes, Myst is as old as I am. This journey to Myst Island is a remake though, rebuilt with new sound, art, and interactions. Myst will also launch with new accessibility options and localizations, opening up its mysterious world to even more players. This is the first time folks on Microsoft consoles will have access to the series, and it’s a bit a gaming classic, just in case you missed out.
