Out of all powers and abilities commonly utilized in fiction, teleportation ranks high on both the practicality and coolness scales. It's a simple ability, moving yourself entirely from one place to another, but the simplest abilities often tend to be the handiest to have. After all, think of how much you'd save on gas money if you could teleport!

With teleportation, you can move halfway around the world in the blink of an eye, enter places you otherwise wouldn't be able to, or quickly escape situations. While teleporting is pretty cool on its own, though, there are definitely ways to make it even cooler.

10 Teleport Beam - Mega Man Series

Since his very first game on the NES, Mega Man has been a regular user of teleportation technology. Though, due to graphical limitations of the time, it was kind of difficult to discern how his tech worked. He'd just sort of... drop from the sky as a mass of pixels before reforming as his usual self.

Later games made this process a little clearer, with Mega Man transforming into a beam of light at Dr. Light's lab, zipping across the world, before touching down and rematerializing in front of a Robot Master's hideout. Both Dr. Light and Dr. Wily have this technology, so either it's really commonplace in Mega Man's world, or they're both just that smart.

Psychic Pokemon are skilled in the use of all kinds of supernatural, extrasensory abilities, teleportation included. In fact, as anyone who has ever played the original Pokemon Red and Blue games can attest with exasperation, teleporting is the signature ability of the Psychic type, Abra.

Abras will instinctively teleport themselves away whenever they feel threatened, making them difficult to catch. If you can befriend one, though, they'll happily take you anywhere you want to go. Provided, of course, that the "anywhere" in question is just the last Pokemon Center you visited. Hey, it's a Pokemon, not a miracle worker. You wanna go further, get a Flying type.

8 Engineer's Teleporter - Team Fortress 2

When you're locked in a perpetual dual against a bunch of mercenaries who bear a striking resemblance to you and your coworkers, you can't afford to be dilly-dallying on your own two feet. That's why Team Fortress 2's Engineer developed his portable teleporter technology. Just set up the entrance at point A and the exit at point B, step inside, and let quantum physics do the rest!

Granted, the teleporters are susceptible to physical damage and Spy sapping like the rest of the Engineer's constructs, and if you're standing in it while someone else teleports, you'll get vaporized. Aside from all that, though, it's perfectly safe! Unless you're bread. Do not teleport any bread.

7 The Institute's Molecular Relay - Fallout 4

Fallout 4's Institute is absolutely teeming with some of the most advanced technology the world has ever seen, from replicators to robots. While the Institute technically isn't the first scientific organization in the post-war world to crack teleporting (Big MT beat 'em to the punch), they did figure out how to do it safely and efficiently.

The Institute utilizes a special system called the Molecular Relay. By locking on to identifying markers, such as the encoded chips in Synth Coursers, they can remotely break down a person's molecular structure, then reassemble it anywhere within range. This is actually how the Institute has stayed so secretive over the years; you literally can't enter the Institute proper without teleporting.

Through the power of the Void, a select few individuals in the world of Dishonored can manifest all kinds of supernatural abilities like self-duplication and stopping time. The most practical of these abilities is teleportation, also known as Blink. With the power of Blink, Corvo can instantly teleport himself to just about anywhere in his line of sight.

While the Blink isn't quite as all-encompassing as some other means of teleportation, it's definitely the most practical version for someone in Corvo's... profession. With a quick Blink, he can teleport across rooftops that he could never vault across, or immediately shake pursuers by teleporting through bars or glass.

5 Nether Portal - Minecraft

There's something to be said for a teleporter you went to the trouble of building yourself, isn't there? Sourcing obsidian takes a bit of Minecraft know-how, after all, so when you finally get enough to arrange it into a gate and light with a flint, it's quite satisfying.

A Nether Portal can only teleport you between the overworld and the Nether, but since both locations have corresponding maps, you can use Nether Portals to set up a network of expedited travel systems. Hop into a portal to the Nether, take your favorite minecart on a scenic ride through the hellscape, and pop through another portal back home!

4 PSI Teleport - Earthbound

Pop quiz: what's one of the coolest means of translocation ever depicted in pop culture? Answer: the time-traveling DeLorean from Back to the Future. Now, imagine if you could run so fast that you hit 88 miles per hour yourself and warp to any part of the entire world, leaving burning tracks behind you. Well, that's exactly how Ness does it in Earthbound.

Thanks to Poo's tutelage, Ness learns the power of PSI Teleport midway through Earthbound's story. As long as he's got a long enough stretch to pick up speed, he can instantly jump to any part of the world he's already visited. There's even an upgraded version of PSI Teleport where you just have to run in circles for a few seconds. It's like a kid's playground game of make-believe brought to life.

3 Max's Toy Phone - Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse

In the third season of Sam & Max, Max spontaneously developed an attunement to a batch of ancient children's toys attuned to the powers of an unspeakable dimension beyond our own. It was a bit of a worrying development at first, but darn if it didn't prove useful, especially once Max got his fuzzy mitts on the toy phone.

Using the toy phone, Max can psychically teleport himself and anyone touching him to the immediate vicinity of any landline or cell phone number he's memorized. The only downside is that teleporting with Max's powers uses his mind as a conduit, which means those who go with him have to experience the disorienting horror show that is his brain. It's not so bad if you keep your eyes shut, though.

In the land of Hyrule, one of the oldest forms of magic is music. Melodies hold power, memories of Triforce wielders and Sages long past. By channeling this power through a musical interest, the Ocarina of Time in Link's case, one can magically teleport to several key locations.

From the Minuet of the Forest to the Requiem of Spirit, the various warp songs taught to Link by Sheik allow him not only to swiftly return to the entrances of the various elemental temples but shave a lot of time off his travels. Ganondorf's doing all kinds of evil stuff, we don't have all day to be gallivanting across Hyrule Field, y'know.

1 Chaos Control - Sonic Adventure 2

The Chaos Emeralds shown throughout the Sonic series hold immense, infinitely-shifting power. Prior to Sonic Adventure 2, these artifacts were mostly just used to power machinery or enhance strength, but as Shadow demonstrates, the right technique allows someone to harness an Emerald's power themselves to distort space-time.

Interestingly, an actual Chaos Emerald isn't a requirement to use Chaos Control. As Sonic learned while hurtling toward his imminent death in the vacuum of space, all you need is something with the same energy wavelength as an Emerald. This is how he was able to Chaos Control with the fake Emerald Tails cooked up.
