A recent tweet has announced that Vigor, an upcoming shoot’n’loot game will be having a free trial running from this upcoming Thursday through Sunday, giving everyone a chance to see how the game has progressed since its early development in the past years.

For the unfamiliar, Vigor was announced for the Xbox One at the 2018 E3 by developers Bohemia Interactive, who are also responsible for the creation of Arma and DayZ. The game places 8 to 12 players together with the objective of shooting their way out of encounters and looting resources that are needed to build both a shelter and vital equipment.

When the game formally launches, it will be available to everyone as a free-to-play title with what we assume for now are only cosmetic purchases. A founder’s pack can be purchased for $19.99 that provides various cosmetics items, an emote, and $40 worth of in-game currency, presumably also for future cosmetic items.

This method of monetization is quite popular these days, as it brings in a broad range of players who may not have purchased the game at first, but who may love it enough to remain and then continue spending. Fortnite by Epic Games is perhaps the most successful and recent example of this, where playing is free and only cosmetics are sold, and yet the game is on track to generate $3.5 billion for the company this year alone.

It will be good to see how the game has evolved in its development since 2018. When it first opened to initial testing, Charlie Hall from Polygon didn't have many positive things to say about the title. First, Hall described various issues relating to climbing, where over and over his character would become stuck when attempting to move over certain objects, to the point where it was far safer to always go around.

Others have stated that in 2018 Vigor felt far too much like DayZ in terms of problematic close-quarters combat. During this initial testing of the game, weapons felt clumsy, shots that should have registered as clear hits apparently missed, and like other games made by the developer, melee combat felt ridiculously overpowered in the face of immense firepower.

With that in mind, it has been roughly a year since that initial testing, and these issues may be completely resolved by this point. In any case, we only have a few days to wait before we can see for ourselves.
