Warcraft 3 has finally received widescreen support.

The 16-year-old real-time strategy game may have been long forgotten by the gaming community, but it hasn’t been forgotten by Blizzard, nor has it been forgotten by a dedicated cadre of Warcraft 3 enthusiasts.

Although Blizzard keeps their older games updated far better than most developers, Warcraft 3 hadn’t seen a patch in 5 years until March of 2016. Since then it’s been getting regular updates every few months to try and get it up to running on recent-spec machinery.

Blizzard’s other classic RTS game, Starcraft, received the same treatment and even got a full remaster recently, much to the accolades of Starcraft lovers the world over. With Warcraft 3’s recent patch the evidence for a remaster in the works seems to be mounting.

The current patch 1.29 isn’t quite a remaster, but it adds two huge hardware advancements that bring a remaster one step closer.

First up is widescreen support, by far the most current aspect ratio of game screens. To support the additional space, Blizzard didn’t reinvent the wheel. The added black bars to the sides of menu screens, and added bookends to the bottom of the game’s interface. Why they didn’t just show a bit more of the play area is anyone’s guess, but likely a technical issue in the game’s code.

The other big change is adding multiplayer lobbies that can support up to 24 players. Maps existed that could handle that many players, but the game’s lobby wasn’t large enough to accommodate, requiring some workarounds.

After that, the patch notes list a long litany of balance changes to hero units, the ostensible general of your Orc, Human, Undead, or Night Elf army. There was also a massive expansion to what the map editor could handle in terms of objects and details, as well as a rotation of game maps for the automated tournament system which has since been reset.
