Releasing alongside its Warhammer 40K counterparts, Games Workshop recently announced four new Battleforce kits for its hit tabletop game, Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

Battleforce kits are a great way to start a new army, as not only do you get the essential units you need in an easy-to-get box - you also save money compared to buying the kits individually. The return of the Age of Sigmar Battleforce boxes just in time for the holiday season is welcome news, but how useful they will be for existing players will depend entirely on their hobby and army needs. Unfortunately, only four factions are being given the special treatment this time - although we hope this will become a permanent feature and expand to include all of the other factions in future.

Ogre Mawtribes

You should never judge a book by its cover. Unless that book is an Ogor. To be fair, you’ll make your mind up based on smell alone as it will hit you far before you have time to see them. By then it will probably be too late. Complete with an Ironblaster and a friendly Gargant, the Ogors are on the hunt for lunch.

Disciples of Tzeentch

Right at the heart of their army, Disciples of Tzeentch have a monstrous Lord of Change that does little to inspire confidence in enemy troops. Besides being a great unit to deploy, it also makes a fantastic centerpiece and would be equally at home on display as it is in tabletop. We round the kit out with a Gaunt Summoner, Kairic Acolytes, and Tzaangors resulting in a sizeable 35 units at your disposal.

Kharadron Overlords

Looking for a contingent to build an army around, but don’t have much time to paint? The ten steampunk-inspired Duardin units from Kharadron Overlords may be the perfect match. Traditionally the skies have been the home for birds, but the tinkering spirit of the Kharadron has led them to the heavens.

Gloomspite Gitz

Gobbos have a long-established heritage in GW games as the maniacal, potion-imbibing younger sibling of the Orcs. In Age of Sigmar, this culture is maintained by the Gloomspite Gitz, who have kept many of the traditions from the world that was. They work themselves into a frenzy, hyped up on potions that their Shamans brew from mushroom, and unleash a swirling cacophony that does as much damage to their own troops as it does anyone else’s. Leading the charge on squigs, their riders can barely point these terror-like space-hoppers with legs in the right direction. Meanwhile, the Fanatics spin, and can be spun, by the giant metal morning stars tethered by long chains; each a planetary body orbiting the other in a perpetual death machine indiscriminate of friend or foe.

GW has made some interesting choices this time around, with some older and less popular factions getting a Battleforce release. No doubt they are looking to get new players hooked on these factions, hopefully in time for a fresh round of releases next year. Had this move seen global adoption across all factions, the uptake for players to start a new project may well be greater, but only time will tell. For now, unless you intend on fielding one of these four, you may be better waiting to see what changes the Broken Realms era ushers in.
