Whether it's a dark crypt or an infested cave, there are as many settings as there are warbands. With that many decisions it can be hard to figure out which warband is best for you. Well, personal taste counts for a lot, especially if you are a long time fan of the lore. To narrow down your choices a bit, it's always best to know who the biggest hitters are. At least to know who to watch out for.

10 Morgwaeth's Blade-Coven

A deadly follower of Khain, Morgwaeth has been sent to the deep dark areas of the realm to search for a shard of their chaos god - and blood, of course.

Her and her blade coven are all about hitting hard, but that is to be expected from someone referred to as The Bloodied. Each member of her warband has their specialty, from ranged Kyrae, to speedy Khamyss.

The extra benefit of this group is that for every Daughter killed, you can choose to inspire one of your remaining fighters. This means you get even deadlier the more you get cornered.

9 Hrogthorn's Mantrappers

Hrogthorn and his retinue are bound together by one thing: hunger. It may not mean much to some, but for this hunter, it's enough to make for a potent fighting force, if not a bit odd.

This ogor may not love being trapped underground, but he will surely try to come out with a fuller belly. To best play as this warband is to focus on Hrogthorn himself. He is the main damage dealer, the rest of his group is best used to buff him.

Able to attack at range and up close, as well as lay traps, he is a dangerous combatant. But, each member of his warband is able to modify his attacks, finish injured foes, or lay complementary traps. Learning what they all do to work in cohesion takes time, but it's worth it.

8 Dread Pageant

The Dread Pageant have entered the depths of the world in search of their venerated Slaanesh. As followers of the chaos god of pleasure, they are more than happy with experiencing any new sensations, especially pain.

Lead by Vasillac The Gifted, this is not a warband for the modest. With this group and the deck that accompanies them, dealing damage and healing go hand-in-hand. Many of their abilities and cards can variably heal or deal damage.

This all makes sense, after you see that many of their other abilities and cards depend on how many wounds your team has. It can be hard taking damage so liberally, but those brave enough to flirt with your characters; deaths could potentially be rewarded.

7 Mollog's Mob

Mollog The Mighty may be an impressively large contender, but he really just wants to be left alone somewhere dark and cozy.

Seeing as that isn't likely, he has taken to fighting those who have disturbed him. This is another warband with a central figure and his retinue that aid him. Mollog is a melee fighter who causes absolute chaos in the midst of a battle thanks to his Whirling Club and mighty seven wounds.

He isn't alone though. You'll want to set up your warband to best help Mollog survive for as long as possible. The Bat Squig is quick and can distract enemies, the Stalagsquig has an ability that lets it start anywhere unoccupied on the map, and the Spiteshroom is deadly to small groups.

6 Spiteclaw's Swarm

Skritch Spiteclaw leads his vermin brethren to loot and murder their way through the caverns below ground. They focus on keen blades and quick feet.

This isn't quite a one-note warband, as each of Skritch's fellow skaven has some oomph to work with, but it is close. Here, speed is your ally, with each of the warband having a solid five in movement.

A tactic you'll be fond of with this group is the bait and switch. A lot of the cards in your deck will benefit this style, with ones like Hidden Paths and Confusion allowing you to change the tone of battle on the fly.

5 Elathain's Soulraid

If you want to focus on speed, then look to Elathain and his warband. Plus, they have a cool nautical kind of theme to them, which is neat.

It is easy to get the drop on your opponent when playing as this group, as their range is incredibly long thanks to their impressive movement and ranged weaponry.

It is best to lead with Tammael, one of Elathain's trusted, and then follow up with the rest of the warband once you've goaded your enemy. This is because Elathain's Soul Harvest, which will kill an enemy and revive Tammael if he has been killed.

4 Rippa's Snarlfangs

Promotions in the world of grots are a rough one. When they don't go well, you get shunned from society at large.

Then you end up fighting in the underground like Rippa now is. It's a rough life, but one Rippa lives quite brutally. Anytime Rippa attacks, he can make a follow-up attack with his wolf. Great for killing weakened foes or harassing multiple opponents with one fighter.

They may only be a trio, but they all have impressive amounts of attack options that can push multiple opponents. It's all about crowd control with this group. Knowing where you're going and how you are going to funnel the enemy into each other or hexes is your best bet.

3 Hedkrakka's Madmob

Hedkrakka's trusty snake tells him the will of Gork, and apparently, his wish is to kill everyone who stands in their way.

It's a weird warband, but a fun one too. Each member of the group has special skills and ranges in which they excel at. Focusing on Toofdagga's ability is a great strategy, as you can push your other fighters towards the enemy leader incredibly quickly.

Killing the enemy leader is a great way to minimize the enemy's abilities, and then you can bring in the ranged Dakko and Hedkrakka himself to wipe up the rest.

2 Lady Harrow's Mournflight

Maybe you want a spookier choice for your go-to warband. Lady Harrow has just what you're looking for.

Being cursed by Nagash apparently has its perks. This isn't the warband to choose if you want to take lots of hits. They have four wounds each, which means you won't die quickly, but you can't get cocky.

Once you understand how to best hit-and-run and use their hex-fueled inspired to your advantage you can reduce the enemy team to dregs in just a few turns. It may not be the optimal choice for new players, but with experience, they'll work well for you.

1 Morgok's Krushas

warhammer morgok's crusha minis

Morgok and his fighters have one goal: to kill any other adversary before them. A goal that can be easily found in the catacombs below.

Morgok and his kindred are rewarded by how aggressive you are. For each attack, you can add a Waaagh!, which can in turn be used for incredible feats of movement or attack. The only challenge here is keeping a level head when attacking.

Keeping a solid idea of your characters' health and what they have left to do will mean not spreading Morgok too thin.
