Warzone's season-ending event has taken place, but a lot of players were left out in the cold as Verdansk was hit with nukes.

Warzone's Verdansk map has been gradually overrun with zombies over the course of the past few weeks. That ended yesterday with an in-game event that saw players turn into zombies and join the horde. Rather than be sent to the gulag, downed players joined the army of the undead and went looking for any players left alive.

Once the map was suitably overrun with zombies, a spectacular cutscene of a nuclear missile launching and being dropped on the map was shown. The event lasted for two hours but was so popular many players didn't have a chance to be a part of it. Social media was filled with people complaining that they had been added to a queue that didn't appear to be budging.

Unlike most of Fortnite's events, watching the end of Warzone's season unfold on YouTube or Twitch wouldn't have been quite as much fun. Watching the bomb drop would have still been a sight to see, though. Once the event had come to an end, players were re-routed to matches on a night-time Rebirth Island. Verdansk is now closed until season three begins later today, at which point a very different map is expected to be revealed.

It's unsurprising Warzone's servers suffered during the event. It was reported this week that the BR spinoff now boasts 100 million players. Chances are a significant chunk of that massive number attempted to be a part of season two's grand finale. Whatever the issues were, Raven Software will be hard at work right now making sure the same thing doesn't happen again when season three launches later today.

A lot of players will know what to expect when they land on whatever will be the main map in season three. Even though Verdansk was bombed, it's expected to still be where Warzone players will do battle. A trailer for season three that leaked online a few weeks ago showed the fictional city during the Cold War era. That would certainly be fitting since Black Ops Cold War has taken the Call of Duty reigns from Modern Warfare.
