In Wasteland 3, you can create your own characters, but if you’re a beginner you might want to choose from a few prebuilt duos.

Wasteland 3 - choosing your starting squad

Each of these duos has a few things that they are good at. Of course, as you level up you can put skill points into whatever you want, but it’s still useful to know what you’re getting into with these characters.

Young Rangers

This pair of ranger lovers have a fairly balanced complement of combat skills. Yuri has two points in Automatic Weapons, meaning he is good at mid-range fighting. A point in Weapon Modding will allow the team to add rudimentary mods to the team’s weapons when they get them, and Hard Ass will open up some early “tough talk” options.

Spence has points in Brawling and Small Arms, which means she’ll have to get in closer to attack, but can make more attacks per turn. First Aid will provide a boost on healing items that will keep her alive even as she draws more fire. This team lacks most utility skills, so you should add another team member or two to round it out when you get a chance.

Punk Lovers

This pair of punks excel at closer combat with a few abilities that allow them to break and enter. Bronco has two points in Melee Combat, but a point in Armor Modding will help keep him and Jackboy alive at closer range as soon as you find or buy some early mods and armor. He also has a point in Hard Ass to open up dialogue options.

Kickboy has a point in Small Arms, giving him short range weapon use. He also has a point in Mechanics and two in Lockpicking, allowing him to break into secure areas and either fix or disable generators and other mechanisms. This duo lacks a lot of the more intellectual skills, long range expertise, or the explosives expertise to disable certain traps while sneaking around.

Father & Daughter

This team has a variety of short and long range, with some stealth and utility skills. William has points in Melee Combat, and can sneak up to get the drop on enemies with a point in Sneaky Shit. He also has a point in Animal Whisperer, which allows him to charm animals to his side and gain an animal follower.

His daughter Li-Tsing has the long range covered with two points in Sniper Rifles. She also opens up dialogue options with Kiss Ass and can open things up with Lockpicking. This duo lacks modding to increase combat potency, as well as any ability to disable traps while sneaking around.

Mentor & Student

This team packs a lot of combat potency with complementary skills. Dusty has big guns, which will allow her to put out a bunch of damage (at the expense of not moving much), and explosives, which will let her deal area damage in battle. Explosives also can help her disarm some traps, and Kiss Ass opens some sweet-talking dialogue options.

Marie is much more mobile with Small Arms, and her skills in Armor and Weapon Modding will help both of them out in combat. This duo lacks some utility skills that opens up different options outside of combat.

Tech Heads

This nerdy duo is adept with a lot more utility skills, but only have one point each in combat skills. Chris has a point in automatic weapons, and has two points in both Barter and Kiss Ass, meaning he is great at being a smooth talker and getting good deals on goods once you find a shop.

Kris, on the other hand, has a point in Small Arms and two points in Nerd Stuff and Weird Science. Weird Science can be used to wield weapons as well, but science weapons are much rarer than other types. This duo lags behind in combat, and playing as them might be difficult until you can level up a few times.
