Summer is rapidly approaching; a time when hordes of people make their way to the beach to take in the sand and surf. But for those of us who may not be able to physically bask in the glory of the ocean and summer sun, there may eventually be a chance that we get to make a digital splash with the help of the Nintendo Switch.

A video has posted from last week’s BAFTA Awards, featuring longtime Nintendo developer, Shinya Takahashi, in an interview with Fandom. When asked of the possibility of bringing the longstanding franchise of Wave Race to the Switch, Takahashi – who happens to be a producer on the series – responded with:

“You may see that game again. We have been trying to make many games and that may be one of them… I personally love Wave Race!”

Wave Race made its first appearance on the Game Boy in 1992, followed by two console sequels: Wave Race 64 on the Nintendo 64 in 1996, and Wave Race: Blue Storm on the Game Cube in 2001.

While Takahashi’s brief quote is not an official confirmation, hopes are high that Switch owners may eventually see the jet ski racing franchise make its way to the portable console. What might be most telling is the fact that Nintendo re-registered the Wave Race trademark in November 2017, maintaining its registration through November 2026. This may indicate that work is well underway on bringing the series to its fourth console within the Nintendo family.

It is too soon to tell exactly how Wave Race will make its next-gen splash. This is especially interesting considering that another title within the jet ski racing genre – Aqua Moto Racing Utopia – is slated for a release on the Switch on April 27th.

However, with games like Metroid Prime planned for the Switch, there may be an indication that Nintendo plans to bring more classic games and franchises to the console. Maybe Nintendo will finally announce a virtual console making its way to the Switch, and we will see a remastered version of Wave Race 64 or Blue Storm. Or maybe an all-new fourth title in the Wave Race franchise will be added to the collection. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that more news surrounding this rumor will be revealed at E3.
