Weird West was announced at The Game Awards last night, and it most certainly looks weird.

It’s hard to tell what to make of Weird West, the new game announced from recently-formed WolfEye Studios. On the one hand, it’s got an isometric top-down view that is distinctly reminiscent of action RPGs such as Diablo and Path of Exile. On the other hand, the overall description seems to make it sound like Weird West will be less of an action romp and more of an immersive role player, sort of like the original Fallout games.

We do know, however, that there is a lot of named talent working on Weird West. Former Arkane devs and co-creators of Dishonored and Prey Raphael Colantonio and Julien Roby have teamed up to make Weird West, and writer Chris Avellone has also signed on. He's the guy that wrote a ton of recent titles, such as Planescape Torment, Divinity: Original Sin, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

And of course, rock star indie darling Devolver is publishing the game, so you know it’s going to be quality.

The Steam page for Weird West is already up even though there’s no release date, but it does have a bit of info. The game is single-player and PC only, has some pretty low system requirements, and describes itself as both an action RPG and an immersive sim. How the game will combine these two elements is likely to be very interesting.

"Discover a dark fantasy reimagining of the Wild West where lawmen and gunslingers share the frontier with fantastical creatures,” is how Weird West describes itself. “Journey through the origin stories of a group of atypical heroes, written into legend by the decisions you make in an unforgiving land. Each journey is unique and tailored to the actions taken - a series of high stakes stories where everything counts and the world reacts to the choices you make.”

Those choices seem to also include whether or not you’ll take the West alone or form a posse for protection--either from lawmen or from the terrifying demons that inhabit the desert.

Check out the trailer above and be sure to wishlist the game on Steam for future updates.
