Judging by the trailer released at San Diego Comic-Con and by the updated subtitle of "The New World," it seems like season 3 will completely strip the west out of Westworld.
Showing off sleek new visuals of a futuristic Los Angeles, in addition to a brand new theme park seemingly based on World War II-era Europe, the new Westworld trailer gives fans more insight into the direction of the new season.
Returning cast members include Evan Rachel Would as the homicidal killing machine known as Dolores, Jeffery Wright as Bernard, a reimagining of the park’s long-deceased creator, and more. Thandie Newton and Tessa Thomson both return as Maeve and Charlotte respectively, with the former previously becoming a host in season 2.
While strange settings and new cast members emerge in the latest season, including Aaron Paul’s bank robber character, it's clear that it's the same show as before. Despite its lackluster second season, Westworld remains HBO’s most anticipated series. Jonathon Nolan and Lisa Joy have both stated that the newest season will be easier to follow.
“We’re looking at the aftermath of the massacre in the park. After all they went through to get out of the park, Dolores finally got what she wanted, so we wanted to see how she interacts with the world and what her plan is. That’s a part of the story we were excited to tell," said Joy.
“Aaron’s character will challenge Dolores’ notions about the nature of humanity. He’s the type of person who doesn’t get to go to Westworld," stated Nolan.
Previous seasons tended to follow an over-arching narrative that mostly followed the individual hosts. Steering from Michael Crichton’s original movie, which released in 1973, HBO’s Westworld allows viewers to humanize the hosts and connect with their favorite characters. This is what has made the series so popular.
With Dolores and Bernard roaming free in the futuristic world, Westworld season 3 is gearing up for one heavily explosive, if not magnifying season. "There's a good mixture of Dolores and Wyatt" in this season, said Evan Rachel Wood at the Comic-Con.
Though little is known about Paul’s new character, he’s sure to bring something amazing to the show. Kid Cudi will also be appearing, whose character was introduced in the initial teaser.
Though fans likely have many questions about the new season, one thing is clear: “These violent delights have violent ends.” With the mobile game in shambles, fans will just have to wait until 2020 in order to find out what will happen.
