With the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot set to release on Friday, we are already wondering what the focus of the next Call of Duty will be. It turns out that some information is already available, including the fact that Treyarch will be the developer. However, whether the next Call of Duty will follow the Black Ops sub-series, reboot Black Ops, or start something else altogether is still up for debate.

Treyarch may be in control of the next Call of Duty for now, but this could change given what happens with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's release. If Call of Duty: Modern Warfare turns out to be the success many are predicting it will be, then the situation could quickly change. While Black Ops 5 may be what is in the pipeline, the next iteration could either shift to a more grounded approach in the apparent vein of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or reboot Black Ops in the style of the original Black Ops which was fairly grounded itself.

The other other hand, if Modern Warfare turns out to be a commercial or critical failure, then Treyarch may well get the green light for a Black Ops 5. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was a fairly successful title with consistent multiplayer updates, so doubling-down on the Black Ops sub-series would be a no-brainer.

Whether a new Black Ops title should come next from Treyarch next is a different question. While successful in many ways, the Black Ops series has veered into the futuristic territory of many other first-person shooters, sci-fi and otherwise. While Call of Duty hasn't always been known for its realism, many of the games' combat had a gritty nature to it that wasn't often seen in other military shooters. The intensity hasn't left the Black Ops series, but it has abandoned its light sense of realism for a science fiction vibe.

As such, Treyarch might follow in Infinity Ward's footsteps and bring its series back to its roots. The original Black Ops was well-liked for its period piece quality and unique campaign, and Modern Warfare's tentative success could make a Black Ops reboot a reality.
