A new game has been released on the Wii U today, and if you still own and use the console it'll cost you the low, low price of $0.99.

Nintendo does one thing better than any other console on the market. Innovate. It's the primary reason Nintendo's console continues to be roaring successes despite not having the power or clout of its rivals Sony and Microsoft. Nintendo's creative minds proved just how innovative they can be via the Wii, and have done so again with this generation of console and the Switch.

However, there's a Nintendo console that came between the Wii and the Switch. The far less successful Wii U. Due to its name, its games, and pretty much everything about it, the Wii U felt like nothing more than an optional upgrade for the Wii. Aside from the classic editions of the NES and SNES, the Wii U is the worst-selling Nintendo console of all time, shifting a shade more than 13.5 million units.

That's why we were absolutely shocked to discover that a brand new Wii U game is being released this month. Today, in fact, if you are reading this on October 17, 2019. It's called Space Intervention, reports GoNintendo, and is an indie game developed by VG && IG.

Gamers who have been sitting on their Wii U waiting for that unlikely comeback probably shouldn't get too excited. Space Intervention appears to be little more than a tweaked version of the arcade classic, Space Invaders. On the bright side, it's available on the Wii U's eShop right now for just $0.99. Plus, it'll only take up 75MB of space, not that you need to be saving it for much else at this point.

Developing and releasing brand new games for all-but defunct consoles seems to be the in-thing at the moment. As well as the Wii U getting a new release, there are also companies creating brand new games for the NES and Sega Genesis. Not ports, not remakes, actual games that have been created and developed from scratch. What a time to be alive.
