Fallout 4 was originally released in November 2015, but it still offers a large, open world for players to explore. If you’re not ready to find your missing son, which has no time limit, there plenty of never-ending radiant quests to accept from every faction. The Commonwealth also contains several large settlements, only expanded by the Far Harbor and Nuka-World DLC. Not every location is marked on your map. One of the best features of the Fallout series is that there are several unmarked areas to discover.

Though Fallout doesn’t take itself too seriously, there are plenty of depressing and creepy locations within the lands of post-war America. The West Coast was able to recover faster than the East Coast, and it shows. The people in the Commonwealth have suffered from low supplies and clean water.

It’s no surprise that during their suffering, the people of the Commonwealth have gone a bit mad. While the situation is a bit sad to see, it makes for some interesting areas to explore. Some might be unsettling at first but offer great rewards for your bravery.

Our list compiles some of the creepiest unmarked locations you have to check out the next time you head into the unknown wild wasteland of Fallout 4. There are several spoilers within, but we hope you’ll delve into these areas. Don’t forget to bring a Companion with you. No one should visit these spooky places alone.

20 Where Mariners Have Lost Their Lives For Decades

via: fallout.wikia.com

The Great Hunt quest may first seem like another endless radiant quest. You're tasked with gathering supplies for The Mariner to increase the defenses of her boat. She tells you of the Red Death, a creature that is destroying boats. With a name like the Red Death, you have no idea if it's going to be a Mirelurk Queen or a Super Mutant Behemoth. After gathering the supplies, you journey to Red Death Island. It's small, but is covered in fog and looks like it was plucked directly from a horror film. There's also the realization that many mariners have died in these waters. The Red Death ends up being no more than a tiny Bloodrage Mirelurk with glowing red eyes. But the island it inhabits and the spooky legend is enough to make your hair stand on edge.

19 A Wasteland With A Mountain Of Mole Rats

via: fallout.wikia.com

One of the creepiest, dirtiest locations is near the Red Rocket Truck Stop, right beside Sanctuary Hills. Before the bombs fell, this den was used to hide waste from Red Rocket's inspectors. They were so impressed by how clean the truck stop was that the truckstop won the "Trashbuster Award." The den was relatively safe until two centuries passed. When the Sole Survivor discovers it, they see it's now a gross cave filled with 36 brain and 23 glowing fungi. The den is glowing with radiation and garbage. A family of mole rats has made the cave their home. They will all attack you on site to protect their queen, a Glowing Mole Rat. Once you leave this disgusting den, you'll be happy to bathe in the radiated waters of the Commonwealth.

18 Just What Were These Skeletons Doing At The Speakeasy?

via: fallout.wikia.com

Speakeasies were unlicensed locations that were popular during the Prohibition era. One has made an appearance in Fallout 4. The Concord Speakeasy is a small, run-down two-story building that is easy to miss. Once you enter, you'll find skeletons all over the building. You'll immediately notice three skeletons sitting on a couch. One is slumped over with a cigar in his mouth. In one of the bedrooms, a skeleton is leaning on a nightside table with a gun pointed at his face. In another room, a skeleton lies next to an unclothed female mannequin on a mattress. The bathroom is where true horror awaits. Three mannequins stand beside a headless skeleton in a bathtub. Don’t worry, his missing skull is in the nearby toilet.

17 Deep Sea Nightma-Rowww Fuel

via: kotaku.com

On the very east of the Commonwealth is the Ocean. Though most of it in unexplorable, there are several unmarked areas to explore. If you have a deep sea phobia, this area might be one of the scariest in the game, proven by the skeleton of a man sitting in a wheelchair at the water's edge. Unlock the "Aqua Boy" perk, and you can breathe underwater without taking any damage. Once you set foot in the sea, your radiation meter will go off the charts. If you travel deep enough into the water, you'll find something off. In an upside-down boat, cat paintings cover the interior. The word "MEOW" is also carved into the boat. It makes you wonder why the Commonwealth is so obsessed with cats.

16 E.T.'s Never Going Home

via: fallout.wikia.com

Southeast of Oberland Station, you'll begin to hear the sound of a crashing plane. It's not the reappearance of the Enclave's vertibirds or even the Brotherhood of Steel's Prydwen. Look above and you can follow the trail of smoke. It leads to the fiery wreckage of a plane crash that turns out to be a UFO. Alien spacecraft are not unusual to the Fallout series, as they've had a small appearance in each title. The crash looks brutal, and you can only wonder if the pilot survived. Follow the green goo on the ground and you'll be led to a dark cave. The pilot is a horrifying alien that will turn immediately hostile. If you manage to defeat him, you'll win his alien blaster pistol.

15 Not A Great Resting Spot For Cars Nor People

via: fallout.wikia.com

Southeast of Recon bunker Theta is a frightening sight. There is a tree lodged between two trees, with another bare tree nearby. The car is rusted, so there's no telling when the crash happened. The car crash may seem unsettling, but what's nearby will shock you. Near the tree is a pot for cooking and a duffle bag, so the place has been inhabited. The residents are no longer living. There are two settlers burned on the ground. They were buried head first, which makes you wonder what they did to deserve such a fate. There is another body of a settler close by on the roots of the tree. It's possible this settler killed and buried the other two. Unfortunately, we'll never know.

14 Soda Follies

via: fallout.gamepedia.com

Southeast of Radiant Crest Shrine in Far Harbor, you'll find a small fuel station. You can see the neon "Open" sign, which is enticing, yet suspicious. If you decide to go in, you'll find a hijacked trainer with two skeletons inside. Enter the basement, and you'll find the remains of Aubrey Copland and his team inside.

The basement itself has a creepy history. Aubrey Copland, a Nuka-Cola employee, wanted to drive Vim! Pop Incorporated out of business. At first, he tried non-violent tactics, but resorted to stealing and attacking the Vim! Pop employees. In one last attack, he tried to use a missile launcher on the factory. The start of the Great War stopped him, and he ended up dying in the bomb blasts.

13 How Far Would You Go To Join A Cult?

via: fallout.wikia.com

Most of the settlers want to be part of some bigger cause in Fallout 4. There are a few factions worthwhile, such as the Minutemen or the Brotherhood of Steel. Others would rather join more sinister groups, like cults. Enter the Malden drainage, and you'll quickly realize it's not just a sewer entrance. It was being used by a cult to initiate new pledges. What you'll first notice is the bloody, beaten body of a settler named Russell Sutton.

Russell discovered the pledge initiation instructions on a holotape. It told him to take various chems to be welcomed in by the order. Russell didn't make it back to the canal, as he was most likely attacked by Raiders before making it to the initiation. The entire cult may have been just a front for Raiders to rob and steal from unsuspecting settlers.

12 When You Are The Prime Test Subject

via: fallout.wikia.com

The abandoned house in Charlestown wasn't always a hotbed of radioactive activity. Before the Great War, Research Assistant Peters was running tests on an experimental serum that could reverse the side effects of radiation poisoning. She first had to absorb a high amount of radiation, then test the serum on herself. After using the serum, it didn't work, and Peters wanted to give up. Unfortunately, Peters heard no reply from her higher-ups on if she could abandon the failed experiment. Peters knew that she would soon succumb to the radiation and recorded one last haunting goodbye on a holotape for her parents. When you discover it, you'll witness the sad remains of the house and be forced to take down the Glowing One, or what remains of Peters.

11 Sawing Up An Unusual Set Of Bones

via: fallout.wikia.com

West of Vault 114 is an innocent looking building called Shenley's Oyster Bar. While it may have previously been used to eat plates of oysters, it's now being used for more devious means. Raiders surround the building, making you wonder what they're trying to hide. A chemistry station and various weapons are around the exterior of the building, which makes it worthwhile to visit. Once you go to the top floor, you'll notice a skeleton laying in the corner. Skeletons aren't unusual in the Commonwealth, but this sack of bones was formerly a captive. His right arm is handcuffed to a dismembered arm with its hand still attached. There's a hacksaw nearby, so his fellow prisoner may have sawed his arm off, or involuntarily had it sawed off for him. The scene resembles a moment straight from the movie Saw.

10 She’s Strapping What To Mole Rats?

via: fallout.wikia.com

Fallout 4's building parking lots are some of the most unsettling unmarked locations in the series. Kendall Parking is no different. The entire building is swarmed in mole rats. Mole rats don't seem too bad, but four of these creatures have frag mines strapped on their backs. The building itself is dark, and there are several ramps, making it hard to walk around. The rats' screams will ring throughout the empty building. The rats aren't the only inhabitants of the parking lot. There's a woman who lives inside the building, who affectionately calls the mole rats her "Ratties." She won't hurt you unless you try to kill her babies. If you do choose to take down the human mole rat queen, after the battle, you'll find a bench with frag bombs and harnesses. She's the one setting up her precious Ratties to explode.

9 A Path Of Fallen Steel

via: polygon.com

The Brotherhood of Steel is one of the most significant factions in the Commonwealth. They often send out patrols to take down mutant threats or search for tech. Each location where the bodies can be found is creepier than the last. North of Relay tower 0MC-810, you'll begin a search for the bodies of the fallen soldiers. Knight Varham's suit ran out of power during an ambush. Instead of letting the enemy take their armor, he was killed. Walk along the path to the area outside of the National Guard training facility, and you'll find more bodies of the Brotherhood. When you collect all of the holotapes of the fall, you'll unlock the Recon bunker Theta, where the squad's leader, Paladin Brandis, is hiding.

8 At Least Your Clothes Will Be Clean

via: youtube.com (Manny Uchiha)

Even before the Great War, people had to have clean clothes. Within Lexington is the Faded Glory Laundromat. There are a few feral ghouls nearby, like always, but they shouldn't be enough to stop you from entering. When you enter, you'll witness a sad scene of what used to be part of ordinary life. There's an overdue library book on a table and companions will comment that this is an excellent place to relax. The machines may not work anymore, but take a peek inside. You'll find a full set of human skeletal remains. When the bombs fell, people thought that a dryer would protect them from the blasts. Unfortunately, these people didn't survive, and the dryer ended up being their tombs.

7 A Hotbed Of Chemical Activity

via: fallout.wikia.com

Chem addiction is a severe issue in the Fallout series, especially in Fallout 4. Even one of your companions, Cait, suffers from addictions unless you help her. The [Substance] Den is an unmarked location northwest of the USS Constitution, the shop on top of the Weatherby Savings & Loan building. The building is three stories tall and owned by Raiders. The location is nothing but a hotbed of illegal activity. The Raiders use countless amounts of drugs here, and you can find their leftovers scattered on each floor. The Raiders also use the building for kidnapping settlers, so you might have to come here often to save someone. What makes this location worse is that every human companion you bring with you will take Jet when they're idle.

6 Money Makes People Do Crazy Things

via: fallout.wikia.com

The region of Concord contains several unmarked locations. One of the largest buildings is the Workhouse, which is four stories tall. The building is mostly in shambles after the Great War, but thankfully, the stairwell is in-tact. As you explore each floor, you'll notice a theme. All of the skeletons are trying to carry away bags of items. On the third floor, there is a skeleton wearing a blue dress which may have been trying to take supplies before fleeing. On the fourth floor, you'll notice a murder scene in-progress. A fully clothed skeleton is choking an unclothed skeleton sitting in a chair. Beside them is a locked safe. The skeletons may have been fighting for access to the safe. The bombs beat them to it, and now the scene has been preserved for centuries.

5 What Was So Great About That Suitcase Anyway?

via: fallout.wikia.com

Some of the spookiest unmarked locations can be found in marked places on the map. It pays to explore every area of the Commonwealth. Underneath the Abandoned Shack in the Glowing Sea is the federal surveillance center K-21B. It was used as an outpost for scientists to continue their research after the bombs fell. Though it was meant to be a bunker, it was poorly prepared for long-term use. Another problem was that scientists had to make it there safely. On a holotape by Jeff Buzensky, he recalls watching his co-worker Bill Stevens rush to retrieve a suitcase but died inches from the entrance. The bunker was not stocked with food, and the other inhabitants starved. When you enter, hopefully in a Hazmat Suit, you'll see the remains of some of America's greatest minds trapped in a bunker at the bottom of a shack.

4 A Replicant Among The Mannequins

via: fallout.wikia.com

Within the Fens is the Combat Zone and the Warren Theater. Once you enter, you'll instantly be reminded of theaters from the past. There are some recognizable details, such as a concession stand and vending machines. Walk deeper inside, and you'll see the large theater stage. There are rows of chairs in front for movie theater patrons to enjoy the show. The show itself is nothing but nightmare fuel. On stage are several mannequins standing in a group. Look at the mannequins closer, and you'll notice another who stands out. It turns out it's a Synth, and he's not happy to see you. The Synth will attack you if you get too close. Fans believe the scene is a reference to Blade Runner, where a Replicant is standing among mannequins to ambush Decker. Either way, it's a frightening experience at the movies.

3 A Torture Chamber For Synths and Humans

via: fallout.wikia.com

West of the Covenant is a compound that is dangerous for both humans and Synths. It was created by Dr. Roslyn Chambers, who hated Synths. The Compound is used to capture suspected Synths and perform experiments on them. She could interrogate them in various ways, and if they didn't give her the information she wanted, she would torture them. After killing them, she would dissect the remains, all in the name of science. It was thanks to her extreme ways that the Covenant was first created. If you've traveled to the Covenant, you already know that the settlement loathes Synths. Dr. Chambers helped create the SAFE Test, which is composed of a series of odd questions that prove you're human. The Compound is a creepy place you shouldn't avoid. You can at least save the trapped prisoner there for Old Man Stockton.

2 A Fun House Of Painful Death

via: youtube.com (Ryan Cross)

Milton Parking Garage is a giant, unmarked building west of Milton General Hospital. From the outside, it seems like any other abandoned building within the Commonwealth. Once you enter, you might not leave alive. The building is covered in several traps. As you enter, there are thirty-one bathroom scales set up as pressure plates which will toss grenades at you. You might survive, but many who entered didn't prove by the number of remains you'll find within the building. There are also traps meant to tempt you with loot. To make matters worse, cymbal-crashing monkeys litter the building which proves several jumps scares. The parking garage is a funhouse of death for an unknown game master that resembles the Saw series of movies.

1 Bringing New Meaning To Schoolyard Bullies

via: fallout.wikia.com

Fallout 4 contains several marked Vaults, but you'll have to look further to find Vault 75. You'll find this vault located underneath Malden Middle School. It was supposed to be a safe place for employees and children attending the school. When the sirens rang, and the bombs fell, families rushed into the vault for safety. The adults are separated from the children and killed before setting foot into Vault 75. The children who survived were put through mental and physical experiments. The weaker children didn't make it through the torture, while the strong thrived. The older children wanted to escape, but could not, as they were too scared of the outside world or killed when they turned 18. One day, the children decided to revolt. When you enter, you'll find the Vault empty, and the only remaining inhabitants are skeletons.
