Wildermyth is a story-focused strategy RPG that follows randomly generated characters on their journeys from obscurity to heroism. It features multiple campaigns that tell epic stories but also have smaller stories within that grow organically with the characters you play with. They can fall in love, have children, develop rivalries, and even transform into half-magical creatures.

With a fun take on turn-based combat and engaging gameplay both on the battlefield and on the world map, Wildermyth is one of those titles that you can definitely feel draining your free time away. Thanks to how the game is designed, there is always more stuff to do.

10 Build Legacies

One of the first things to be aware of is the fact that as you play Wildermyth, you are building the legacies of the characters you control. These characters are immortalized in the Legacy section of the main menu.

One neat feature of the game is that you may get the chance in a campaign to recruit a character that has a Legacy, acquiring that character once more. They will not be as powerful as they once were in their first campaign, but they will be a welcome addition to your team. By doing this, you can improve that character's legacy, and end up with mythical heroes worthy of epic tales.

9 Explore The Map

The main stage for Wildermyth is the region map. Here you can set your characters' tasks, making them explore, build defenses, and fight enemies. Scouting new areas is an important part of this and, and is the main way that you can progress throughout a campaign's story.

While you can make a straight line to the chapter's main objective, it will be more beneficial to fully explore the available region and complete as many tasks as possible. Not only will this provide you with more resources and opportunities to level up your heroes, but it will give you more Legacy Points and years of peace once the chapter ends.

8 Understanding Damage

It can take a little while to understand every element of the damage formula in Wildermyth. First of all, you'll notice that each attack has a "Stunt chance." This is Wildermyth's equivalent of a critical hit and Stunts will have your characters doing extra damage while they shout a cool-sounding line.

Secondly, it's important to take Armor into account. Armor provides flat reductions to damage so it's important to have some abilities on hand that either Shred Armor or Pierce right through it when going up against bulkier enemies.

7 Incursions

Wildermyth Incursion notification

Incursions are a threat in most chapters that you can play. These are timed events that launch a small army of enemy monsters at your heroes. They destroy tiles as they go, which can seriously impact your resource management as destroyed towns cannot be rebuilt.

If you have not built enough defenses to repel an incursion, you can take them on with your heroes to stop them in their tracks. Beware, however, as losing against an incursion will instantly reduce the tile in which the battle happened to a wilderness again — make sure your entire party is gathered before proceeding. Time your events around incursions by watching the timer at the top of the screen.

6 Foster Relationships

Relationships are just one of the ways that your characters can develop over time. The main three categories are Friends, Lovers, and Rivals and each has its own function on the battlefield. These relationships usually start as Friendships but can randomly become Rivalries or, if the two characters are compatible, Lovers.

Friends have a higher chance of Stunting when adjacent to each other, Lovers will gain damage bonuses against enemies who attack their partner, and Rivals get a bonus to Stunt chance when their rival performs a Stunt. Keeping these effects in mind and actively taking advantage of them can greatly increase your success in battle.

5 Recruitment

Over the course of a campaign, you will get multiple opportunities to recruit a new character. This is an important decision to take and should be one of the first things you do when it's available. Recruitment involves an event where the new character meets your party, and then another where they train up and you choose a class for them.

Recruiting new characters as soon as possible increases the number of things you can do on the campaign map at a time. Splitting your party up to do the safer tasks all at once is a great strategy when time is of the essence, but make sure you get everyone back together when taking on difficult fights.

4 Cover Is Crucial

Cover is part of the more in-depth aspects of the battle system. Simply put, when a character is next to cover they gain a defense bonus. There are two tiers of Cover, and you can tell how defended your character will be by how many solid diamonds appear when moving them to a particular spot.

Directionality plays a part in determining the defense bonus of Cover. You will gain a bigger boon if you take cover opposite from the foe's attack rather than beside it.

3 Think Carefully When Building

When scouted by your characters, some tiles will allow them to construct some defenses there rather than a resource-producing building. When doing this, you have the option of searching for an item. Not searching for the item will make the building take less time.

A good rule of thumb is to always search for items towards the beginning of a campaign and towards the beginning of a chapter. Later on in the game, you should have characters well-equipped to get by and enough resources to make things for new recruits, so you can forgo the search and get things done quicker.

2 Mystic Confusion

Wildermyth battle showing interfusion with a rock and then using Discus

Wildermyth's Mystics are not your standard RPG mages. They use a power called Interfusion, which allows them to "Interfuse" with objects and cast spells depending on the object they choose. For example, when Interfusing with stone objects, Mystics gain access to the Discus spell.

It's important to keep in mind that the range of such spells depends on the location of the Interfused object, and not the Mystic themself. This does mean that the effective range of a Mystic is much larger than you might think and they can use their powers to attack enemies around corners and far across battlefields.

1 The Workshop Is Open

Wildermyth Mod Menu

Wildermyth has a burgeoning modding community, and it is a great idea to take advantage of that fact. The Steam Workshop has a lot of different mods available to you, including mods that add events, mods that rebalance certain aspects of the game, and even mods that add a ton of hairstyles.

If you ever find yourself reading the same events a few too many times or seeing the same heroes over and over again, consider downloading some mods to expand the game even further. Always remember though, some mods need to be enabled in the Options menu first!
