It's been quite some time since we last heard about Windjammers 2. Already in a solid-state at last year's PAX East, the latest trailer shows off a more confident game than what I've previously played. DotEmu has revealed that series veteran Steve Miller (not that one) will be on the roster and he's coming alongside a more in-depth arcade mode.

I'd hesitate to call this a proper campaign still, but arcade mode will feature an overworld map where players will have some choices between which opponent to face next. It creates something of an old-school Super Mario vibe, which is likely what the developers were going for.

As well as that, a new mini-game called "Disc Attack" will be present. This tasks you with breaking clay discs that get shot from a machine, which is exactly the kind of thing that Windjammers excels at. With such tight controls, I'm surprised the original didn't feature similar gimmicks between matches. Then again, this 20+ year wait for a sequel was something no one could have anticipated.

If you're dying to try out Windjammers 2, a slightly altered demo is available on Steam for the ongoing Steam Games Festival. It features an extra level from the previous build but does not have Steve on the roster. That's perfectly fine as even the limited roster available was fun as hell. Similar to last year's Streets of Rage 4, Windjammers 2 is an excellent evolution of what came before and is something that any retro enthusiast should give a shot.
