Acquiring a set of Grandmaster Ursine armor is no easy task, but it's well worth the effort. As part of the Bear School Gear in the Blood and Wine expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, a player needs to seek out all other Ursine armor diagrams that came before it in order to create the set.

Armor Types – Light, Medium, and Heavy

The Witcher 3 allows players to choose from three armor types. In general, we can say that light armor allows for quick, nimble movement that focuses on critical and fast attacks. Medium armor increases Sign and Stamina regeneration and is, therefore, best for those seeking a mage build. Finally, heavy armor increases maximum HP and strong attacks, which helps if you want to build a tank, and favors swordplay.

What is the Ursine set good for?

An armor set is only as good as players are at exploiting its set bonuses and attributes. The benefits of the Ursine set are varied. For example, the full set allows players to quickly acquire three points of adrenaline, which can then be used to activate Undying. This also allows players to sustain abilities like Whirl and benefit from the proper and aggressive use of Quen abilities.

On the other hand, the Ursine set is not ideal for Sign builds. It is tailored towards combat with swords, which is what some players strive for. This is why it is important to evaluate all of the sets before deciding which one to obtain. Or, if you are a completionist and collector, you can simply devote your game time to tracking them all down as if they were Pokémon.

Armor Attributes and Set Bonuses

The set of heavy armor boasts the following resistances:

  • +22% Adrenaline point gain
  • +26% Resistance to piercing damage
  • +25% Resistance to bludgeoning damage
  • +32% Resistance to slashing damage
  • +46% Resistance to damage from monsters

In addition, the gear comes with three free slots. The armor also makes you far more resistant, but this comes at the cost of Stamina regeneration. Players must be at least level 40 to equip it.

Wearing at least three pieces of the gear grants bonus chance to cast another Quen shield at no Stamina cost, but only if the previous Quen shield shatters. This receives a 5% additional bonus increase for each equipped set piece.

Wearing all six pieces will increase damage inflicted from Quen-related abilities by 200%.

Locating the Diagrams for the Grandmaster Ursine set

Perhaps the most difficult aspect of acquiring the armor is seeking out all of the diagrams and crafting reagents.

First, you must head to a wine cellar that is entombed beneath a rock at Flovive. In the village, there is a red building toward the left that is surrounded by rubble. There, Gerald will make a comment about being “undermined."

Use the Aard sign on the rubble to move it aside, which will grant you access to a cellar. Inside, you will find a chest to the right that contains the diagrams for the Silversword, gauntlets, and the Grandmaster Ursine armor.

Next, you will need to travel north until you find a cave at the end of a watery inlet. Inside are Giant Centipedes that will try to slow you down. However, they are easily defeated. Be sure to explore the entire cave, as there are armor dyes and other treasures to be found. Eventually, you will find a chest with the diagrams for the Grandmaster Ursine Trousers, Boots, and Steel Sword.

Armor Crafting Requirements

Finding the diagrams for the Grandmaster Ursine Gear is only one part of the puzzle. Below are all of the components you will need to craft the armor, assuming that all of the diagrams have first been located:

  • Infused Slyzard hide x 2: This is a crafting component added in the Blood and Wine expansion. It is an expensive item to craft and is needed for all the Grandmaster gear. It may be crafted with 1 × Cured draconid leather and 1 × Infused crystal.
  • Enriched dimeritium place x 2: This is another component only available the expansion. It can be crafted from 2 × Enriched dimeritium ingot
  • Monster essence x 1: This is a rather common crafting element that can be dismantled from barghest essence, essence of wraith, golem’s heart, light essence, crystalized essence, dark essence, shaelmaar hair, elemental essence, Endrega embryo, or water essence.
  • Monster Heart x 1: This is found by dismantling either a endrega heart, Gargoyle heart, Nekker heart, shaelmaar hair, or golem’s heart.
  • Mastercrafted Ursine armor x 1

The final component is the most complicated. To craft the Grandmaster set, you must first find all of the necessary diagrams and craft a set of Mastercraft Ursine armor. This armor set then needs the Superior Ursine armor, which continues all the way to the most basic set of Ursine armor.

Because of this, it is better to start crafting the Grandmaster Ursine armor as early as you can since it will surely take a while. Attempting to do it all at once might feel like a chore since there are several prerequisite armors that must first be acquired in addition to crafting materials.

Steel and Sword Crafting Requirements

The swords also have unique crafting requirements and they also require previous versions of the swords in order to reach the final Grandmaster level. To craft the silver sword, you will need the following:

  • Mastercraft Ursine silver sword × 1
  • Leather scraps × 2
  • Enriched dimeritium ingot × 2
  • Monster saliva × 1
  • Monster tongue × 1

  • +21% Adrenaline point gain
  • +75% Critical hit damage bonus
  • +5% Critical hit chance
  • +14% Chance to dismember
  • +20% Bonus experience from monsters

Finally, to craft the complimentary Steel sword, you will need:

  • Mastercraft Ursine steel sword × 1
  • Leather scraps × 2
  • Enriched dimeritium ingot × 2
  • Monster blood × 1
  • Monster brain × 1

Once crafted, this sword provides:

  • +21% Adrenaline Point gain
  • +75% Critical hit damage bonus
  • +5% Critical hit chance
  • +14% Chance to dismember
  • +5% Bonus experience from humans and nonhumans

Conclusion

Following all of these steps will allow you to obtain the Grandmaster Ursine armor set and make use of its unique bonuses. Although it may seem like quite a bit of work, both the abilities that the set provides, as well as how amazing it looks once Geralt tries it on, make it worth the effort.
