Netflix's The Witcher creators wish to expand on monster battle scenes for season two – not only because there is a shortage in the Blood of Elves novel, but because people really liked watching Geralt battling monsters in The Witcher 3.

Showrunner Lauren Hissrich spoke of the subject in the latest issue of Sci-Fi and Fantasy magazine (via Redanian Intelligence). The Witcher season two is largely based on Andrzej Sapkowski's novel Blood of Elves, but the next season will be quite different from the first one, as it brings a more linear narrative, more intense stories for the main characters, and an overall darker tone to the series.

However, the writing team has reread the original book to transfer all the hallmarks and to further expand on the things that people loved the most — both from the books and the games.

"For instance, Blood of Elves lacks monsters. There's just not very many," Lauren Hissrich explains. "But we know from the games that people really like to see Geralt battling monsters, so we continued adding more monsters to Season 2."

For many, the first season was a bit of a letdown in terms of the visual effects. Yet with an increased budget for season two, Netflix can deliver the monster battle sequences fans have been expecting.

As for the CDPR games, combat is certainly one of the central pillars, but it's not the only feature that propelled the franchise to greatness – the stories, the characters, and their relationships are what really drive the players forward. Hopefully, with the new Witcher episodes, the creators can deliver on that side too, boasting spectacular development for Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri. And it seems the showrunner is aware of that challenge.

"The goal is taking everything we can from the source material and then looking at where we need to bulk up the story to honor all these characters," Lauren added.

The Witcher season two will debut on Netflix on December 17, with a season third season already confirmed by Netflix.
