The summoning and multiplayer systems in Wo Long are extremely similar to how Team Ninja tackled them in Nioh 2. It allows you to play with friends in a password-locked lobby, or open it up to strangers to join you. You can also invade other players in an attempt to hinder their progress on any map.

How To Play Co-Op

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty - the main multiplayer menu at the battleflag

As of the second mission in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, you'll have access to the Online Lobby tab when you rest at any Battle Flag.

To play co-op, you'll all need to have one Tiger Seal, which is the item that you also use to summon your NPC Followers. These can be found as loot and dropped by killing invaders.

You do not need to complete a Battleground in single-player before you can invite your friends.

Within the Online Lobby menu, there are several options you can choose from, and these are Recruit, Co-op, and Invade. The first two options are different from each other, while Invading is fairly self-explanatory.

Co-Op

If you and your friends want to play together, this is the option you want. Inside the menu, you can select a password so that your multiplayer lobby is private and you won't have any random people popping in to take up a spot.

You can only invite two other players to your lobby, meaning a maximum of three players can tackle a mission together at any given time.

You will need Tiger Seals to join and host co-op lobbies.

Once you've set a password, share it with your friends and open the lobby. You'll see a new screen with several options. Here, you can send direct invitations to your friends or recruit people who have the password.

This is effectively the lobby menu where you choose the mission you want to do, change your equipment, Divine Beast, Spells, and so on.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty - waiting in the multiplayer lobby

Once your friends are invited and a Battleground has been picked, you can launch the game and drop in together. In multiplayer, you'll be notified about the Aid Gauge. If you've played Nioh 2 online, this will be familiar to you.

As long as the Aid Gauge is not completely drained, you can revive your friends if anyone dies. Once the gauge is empty, you'll result in a game over and respawn at the last Battle Flag you rested at.

Your friends won't be sent back to their world, and you can continue through the level as normal. Upon clearing a mission, you can choose a new Battleground and keep the party going.

Recruit Allies

If you want help on the Battleground you're currently on, you can select Recruit to open your game up for people to join.

For someone to join, they will need to select the Respond option in the Recruit tab. This will search for any lobbies looking for someone to join them and automatically invite them to your game.

This function effectively serves as a pick-up group party finder. If none of your friends has the game and you're stuck, this is a great way to seek help from another person and tackle a challenging Battleground together.

This option is locked to the Battleground you're currently on when searching to recruit someone, meaning you don't set up a lobby and choose the mission the same way as in regular multiplayer.

Level Sync

If you and your friends you want to play with are on different levels, the level sync function will help balance any strength discrepancies. This is helpful if you're more powerful than your friends because it will bring your power and equipment down to match the level of the chosen mission.

Level sync is applied in invasions as well as cooperative play, which keeps things fair when playing together. This means your level will be lowered if you want to re-play a previous mission in co-op. This function only applies during online play and will not be used in single-player mode.

How To Invade (PVP)

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty - the main character stands next to an enemy while invading another player's world

This is a new function in a Team Ninja game that lets you invade another player's world, ala Dark Souls and Elden Ring. Invading is straightforward. You choose the option from the Online Lobby menu and then the game will search for a world for you to invade.

Your goal is simple: kill the host of the world and their followers. If you're successful, you'll be rewarded with Accolades, which is a currency you can spend at Zuo Ci in the Hidden Village for more gear and consumable items.

When you spawn in, you'll be by one of the main Battle Flags and you'll have an ominous red aura around your characters. Enemies will be friendly to you, and you can run around the map in search of the host.

If you don't want to be invaded by other players, you can turn off the function in the system settings. If you go to the settings tab on the pause menu and choose Online Settings, you'll see an option that says Invasions by hostile players.

Turning this off will mean you can play online without being worried about another player coming to wreck you.
