Advocacy group Women in Games has released a 150-page guide on combatting gender inequality in the gaming industry. The guide, titled Building a Fair Playing Field, seeks to "galvanise action" in increasing the number of women in the industry, as men continue to disproportionately dominate the field, especially at higher levels.The guide, which was put together by Women in Games CEO Marie-Claire Isaaman and researcher Sharon Tolaini-Sage, comes after high-profile abuse scandals have plagued the industry over the past few years. It will be distributed to "video games, esports, and connected industries" who are interested in advancing diversity. "Women remain significantly underrepresented in the games industries", the group says in the guide's description (thanks, Eurogamer). "Well-publicised controversies around dysfunctional working cultures in the games industries add to the urgency for change."The group further claims that "abuse and discrimination in online multiplayer games is increasing", adding to the need for industry leaders to be mindful of the workplace and communities they are cultivating.
The guide also points to how pre-existing inequalities can exacerbate gender discrimination in the workplace. For example, an "always on" work culture, which sees many companies force excessive overtime to get games shipped, may be more likely to hurt women with childcare commitments, halting their progress in the industry. Women in Games also worries that the split between those working in the office and others working from home will create a "two-tiered" hierarchy in the industry, with those in the office more likely to receive promotions.
Overall, from more consideration for those with menstrual pain, to regularly discussing workplace issues with employees, the guide is full of ways companies can improve the industry. The guide is available to download for free on the Women in Games site now.
